Put full control in your hands, with the best steering wheels for sim racing.
Whether you’re into F1 esports or have loved sim racers since Crash Team Racing, adding a specialised steering wheel to your gaming set-up is going to elevate your experience. There’s nothing like racing around tight chicanes and flying across the finish line to get the heart pumping! If you’re looking to add a racing wheel into your set-up, then you’re in luck! Today, we’re taking a deep dive into the best wheels available at Overclockers UK.
What Is a Racing Wheel?
A racing wheel is an input device for your gaming PC or console. They serve the same purpose as a steering wheel, often with added features to closely resemble the wheels utilised by racing and supercars. These features can include paddle shifters, shift indicators, or segmented dials for on-the-fly adjustments. Additionally, they are usually manufactured with the same premium materials found on their vehicular counterparts, such as carbon fibre, Alcantara, and leather. It’s all about that true-to-life experience!
What are the benefits of having a steering wheel?
There are many benefits to using a steering wheel when playing your favourite racing sim, especially competitively. These include, but are not limited to:
- Better immersion
- Heightened control
- Improved accuracy
Better immersion comes from features such as force feedback. This emulates the feel of the road by feeding back this sensation right into your hands. Akin to rumble pads on controllers, but far more realistic.
Heightened control is all but a given. The best way to manoeuvre a vehicle is with a wheel, it’s something your WASD keys or joysticks just can’t replicate. Utilising a wheel, your driving will be much more intuitive and natural.
Improved accuracy is unlocked due to turning ranges, which also helps you drive in a style that suits your game. Common turning radiuses include 270-degrees, 1080-degrees, and certain high-end hardware even boast unlimited turning range. The general rule of thumb, the higher the radius, the more accuracy and flexibility your wheel will have. Additionally, the inner hardware that reads these rotations will have a high resolution for the most accurate data input.
Do I need a pedal set?
A pedal set is not essential, as an independent racing wheel will feature paddle shifters for changing gear plus a means of braking and accelerating. However, if you are aiming for the most immersive and competitive set-up, then adding a pedal set will really elevate your game.
Most commonly, pedal sets will include two pedals – the throttle and brake. Premium and hyper-realistic models opt for three pedals, adding a clutch into your arsenal. Adding in a pedal set takes these controls away from your hands, for a much more natural experience.
Do I need a gear shifter?
Once again, these are not essential kit, as you have full control of your gears with your wheel. However, if you would like a more authentic driving experience, then they are a great addition! Add-on gear shifters can either let you move through your gears in sequential shifts or the “H” pattern seen in manual cars. Some even do both, like the Thrustmaster TH8A, so you can toggle between the styles depending on your race.
What Games Support Racing Wheels?
Many popular racing franchises support racing wheels, but please bear in mind not all games do. As such, it is absolutely worth checking online beforehand. What’s more, certain brands may only be compatible with a limited number of games – especially for certain features and adjustments within software such as Thrustmaster’s T.A.R.G.E.T. or MOZA’s Pit House. It should also be noted that wheel support can be added to select games with mods.
Here we have a list of some of our fave racing sims that support wheels on PC. It’s not all of them, but it’s enough to get you started!
