Last night, we returned to the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms 2023. Conducted by Anna-Maria Helsing, this grand musical event was a deep dive into all our favourite orchestral fantasy and adventure soundtracks from film, television, and gaming.
Catch Up with Last Years BBC Proms:
If you want to catch up with the sounds of last year’s BBC Proms, be sure to read through our dedicated blog post.
What are BBC Proms?
Before we take a look at this year’s celebrations, what exactly is the BBC Proms? The BBC Proms is a huge classical music festival, consisting of several different concerts spread across eight weeks, including the Royal Albert Hall and Proms in the Park.
For the BBC Proms 2023, the 57th event has a focus on fantasy, myths, and legends, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of J. R. R. Tolkein’s death. The classical music pieces will be iconic soundscapes from all our favourite fantasy series.
The Featured Soundtracks:
There were so many beautiful soundtracks played last night, but we’ve managed to narrow it down to a few of our favourite featured soundscapes.
Straight off the bat, Howard Shore transported us to babbling brooks and rolling grass fields of the Shire by performing several orchestral pieces from ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’. These stunning soundtracks got us all in the mood for our annual rewatch of the series (it can’t just be me who does this, right?) or get out our favourite LOTR games to embark on a thrilling adventure through Middle Earth.
Looking for some inspiration for your Middle Earth travels? Get ready to take on an epic quest to hunt down your precious and defeat the sneaky little hobbitses who stole it from you in Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
With the long-awaited season two of ‘Good Omens’ recently dropping on Amazon Prime, hearing David Arnold perform an orchestral rendition of the main theme tune took us right back to Neil Gailman’s world of angels and demons. If demons exist, then David Tenant’s steampunk portrayal of Crowley is exactly how I hope they look.
Getting us inspired to become dragon riders was the iconic track from ‘Game of Thrones’ performed by an orchestra lead by Roman Djawadi. Anything from the fantastical world of George R.R. Martin makes us wish that we lived in Westeros to give us a fighting chance of battling for the Iron Thone. Plus, maybe we could rewrite that final season once and for all…
Whilst it might not be St. George’s Day, if hearing this classical soundtrack from ‘Game of Thrones’ has got you in the mood to take down some dragons, then here are our favourite virtual worlds cursed by these scaled beasts!
Next up on our top featured soundtracks from the BBC Proms 2023, is ‘Malach the Angel Messenger’ from ‘World of Warcraft’ by Eimear Noone. This beautiful rendition of a classic piece of WoW music gave us all the inspiration we needed to depart to Azeroth and protect this great land from deadly evils.
Transporting us back into the wonderful world of Hayao Miyasaki, was Joe Hisaishi’s performance of ‘My Neighbour Totoro’. This orchestral piece from one of Studio Ghibli’s iconic animations made my heart swoon. It takes me straight back into dreaming of a world full of Totoros that I too can take a nap with in a forest. Come on, just try to tell me that you’ve never dreamt of riding the cat bus.
