What Power Supply Do You Need for the NVIDIA RTX 50 Series?
There isn’t a one-fits-all solution when it comes to power supplies for the RTX 50 Series. Each GPU has its own TDP therefore you’ll need to ensure your PSU can handle the demands of your chosen model with extra wiggle room for any unexpected power spikes.
We’ve broken down the confirmed TDP for each GPU announced below.
- RTX 5090 – maximum TDP of 575W. We recommend you pair the RTX 5090 with at least an 850W or even 1000W PSU with a high 80 PLUS rating of at least Gold.
- RTX 5080 – maximum TDP of up to 360W. For the RTX 5080 we suggest a PSU with at least 850W and a high 80 PLUS rating of at least Gold.
- RTX 5070 Ti – TDP of up to 300W. We recommend you pair the RTX 5070 Ti with at least 750W or 800W and a high 80 PLUS rating of at least Gold.
- RTX 5070 – maximum TDP of 250W. For the RTX 5070 we suggest a power supply with at least 750W and at least an 80 PLUS rating of Gold.
In addition to accommodating each GPU’s TDP, your power supply should be able to handle the demands of modern-day hardware. This includes ensuring it is ATX 3.0 compliant.
An ATX 3.0 PSU has been designed from the ground up to be compatible with the latest generation of hardware, including the NVIDIA RTX 50 Series. These power supplies feature an onboard 16-pin PCIe 5.0 connector, along with improvements to power delivery to ensure any unexpected spikes won’t damage your hardware.
In addition to this, the NVIDIA RTX 50 Series all use a 12V-2×6 cable. In short, this is an updated version of the 12VHPWR cable, designed to migrate the issues seen with the previous 40 Series. 12V-2×6 is notably safer and more reliable but can still deliver up to 600W of power. What’s more, the 12V-2×6 is backwards compatible with the existing 12VHPWR connector, and you can also use a 2×8-pin to 12V-2×6 cable if your PSU doesn’t include a native 12V-2×6 port.
If you want to learn more about 12V-2×6 and how it differs from the old 12VHPWR connector, be sure to check out our blog post.
