Boti Byteland Overclocked is a whimsical look into the life of a data transfer “bot” called Boti. A new robot who accidentally plunges the world into a buggy, glitch-filled, virus-infected landscape.

From Untold Tales comes a 3D platformer resonating with my childhood love of all things collecting, fighting, and discovering! There’s a new world to save, even if we are the ones that have doomed it.

OcUK Computer Technician and Support Assistant Liam Bould reviewed Boti Byteland Overclocked on his Ryzen based gaming PC.

Gameplay

Movement in Boti Byteland Overclocked is effortless, allowing you to run, jump, double jump, glide, dash, and attack your way through Byteland.

There are unique arcade-style sections of platforming to get your teeth stuck into. Some of these place you at the controls of an electronic ship, while others have you skating along a Guitar Hero inspired track, attempting to hit all the notes. These sections provide fun mini-games which you can  endlessly repeat until you nail a perfect run.

Fighting the many bugs, viruses, and glitches is simple. Boti uses a three-move combo to deal damage, alongside a dash attack and physically throwing enemies. Additionally, his ground slam gives you the ability to dispatch all the malware. In Byteland there are a host of enemies to battle, from glitches that slow you down, to worms and viruses that are eager to take a bit out of our cute protagonist.

Changing levels is done from a hub world where you’re able to jump into plenty of different locations. These levels are filled with hidden areas, unique items, and precious data. You can even discover in-game currency that allows you to upgrade Boti, unlock new areas, and much more! There are even cosmetics that change how Boti looks! (My personal favourite being an outfit raided straight from the set of The Matrix).

Combat is simple but fun, with an almost hack ‘n’ slash feeling thanks to the seemingly unending number of enemies. Levels fluctuate from tight platforming to unique segments that might take you a few tries to perfect.

ART

Boti Byteland Overclocked has a beautiful art style reminiscent of 3D platformers from the late 90s, taking inspiration from the likes of Fall Guys. The game uses levels to tell the story, with various other bots you can speak to furthering the narrative.

The game’s opening sees us placed into a spawling construction area/cargo bay, with data being transferred all around you. This quickly changes into a grimy glitch-filled sewer with another bot controlling a circus filled with viruses.

Hidden touches and easter eggs are littered throughout. Safety posters warning you that “hard bots wear hard hats”, or about “a spill, a slip, a hospital trip”, all help to entice us into the world of Boti Byteland. Even empty toothpaste tubes full of thermal paste help to bring the world to life.

The various bots around the maps wear an incredible wardrobe to signal their role, from construction bots in hard hats following the health and safety rules, to bots on strike holding megaphones and picket signs.
