Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR is finally out, and we can’t wait to jump into the world of Assassins, Brotherhood, and parkour like never before.
Already being hailed as the best Ubisoft game in years, there’s a lot to be excited about for Assassin’s Creed Nexus! With an established and beloved franchise, AAA studio, and the graphical performance of the Meta Quest 3, AC Nexus has the makings of an incredible VR game before you even launch it.
Gameplay
Every so often, you come across a VR title where the source material is almost crying out for a virtual reality adaptation. Assassin’s Creed, with its parkour, stealth, and breathtaking world design, has always had the perfect trifecta for VR.
AC Nexus sees us enter the role of an assassin like never before! This isn’t a small first attempt at a VR game from a AAA studio but a full-fledged standalone VR title, and I’m so here for it. In terms of gameplay, Assassins Creed Nexus plays like pretty much any other AC title in the franchise. I’ll admit when I first heard about Ubisoft making a VR Assassin’s Creed game, I assumed we’d simply be revisiting old content, but Ubisoft has really thrown their weight behind this game.
In Nexus, we take on the role of familiar faces: Ezio Auditore, Kassandra, and Connor. There’s first-person stealth, combat, and parkour to be had throughout genuinely beautiful open maps featuring free exploration. Oh, and of course, there are leaps of faith into the usual carts of hay.
Kicking off in Mixed Reality, Assassin’s Creed Nexus takes full advantage of the Quest 3’s generational improvements. Not only does the game look stunning, but VR has been seamlessly introduced into the franchise. That cup over there, throw it to distract the guard; need to get over a fence? Climb it, dummy! Mixed Reality isn’t limited to just the beginning of the game, either. Without offering up too much of a spoiler, the game takes advantage of MR to bring in the game’s real-world Brotherhood storyline. When outside of the Animus, you’ll occasionally be transported back to your living room to interact with a 3D futuristic panel akin to some Cyberpunk Teams update. It’s here where we’ll take calls from the Brotherhood and complete 3D authentication puzzles to access the cloud.
How To Play Assassin’s Creed Nexus
PCVR fans, don’t set your hopes too high, as AC Nexus is currently a Meta-exclusive title. To play Assassin’s Creed Nexus, you’ll need either a Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, or Meta Quest Pro.
I’m glad it came to standalone. That’s a statement that might have the VR purists crucify me, but I stand by it. AC Nexus is likely to be a lot of gamers’ first entry into VR, with many buying a headset just to play this game. Whether you like it or not, standalone VR is the best possible entry into VR for most gamers and, especially, newcomers. And with the amount of moving around you’ll be doing in AC Nexus, you won’t want a tether cable or bulky headset weighing you down.
Obviously, however, I would love to see a full PCVR version of Assassin’s Creed Nexus, but that doesn’t seem likely any time soon. However, if you’re in the mood for some PCVR, we’ve got you covered with our Coming To VR series.

TLDR
Whilst not the first AAA title to enter the VR gaming space, Assassin’s Creed Nexus is a welcome addition. Finally, we can fully embody Ezio Auditore, Kassandra, and Connor with groundbreaking standalone VR graphics.
