After a several-month delay, Border Bots is finally launching on Steam PlayStation VR2 and Meta Quest headsets! In this article, we’ve got all the deets and a sneak peek at gameplay before tomorrow’s launch.

Initially pegged for a September 2023 release, VR puzzle simulation Border Bots will finally launch on` February 8th. Set in a future version of Earth, Border Bots is a VR puzzle simulation game where AI has taken control. As a human border agent, you’ll need to operate the booth at an AI travel border and keep any unauthorised and deviant bots out.

Gameplay – VR Meets Papers Please

Border Bots VR falls into the always entertaining VR category of puzzle simulation. Set in a future where AI is everywhere, some robots have started to ignore their instructions. It’s your job to staff the border booth, interact with robots, and check their credentials. We never would have asked for Papers Please VR with Robots, but we’re so happy Border Bots exists!

Our first interaction with a bot is the sassy medical droid who just broke the urn containing our grandparents’ ashes… Not impressed with our small apartment’s clutter, our new ‘friend’ is here to check on our vitality. After fist-bumping, confirming we are, in fact, alive, and planting a medical scanner in our space, we’re interrupted with breaking news. Bots are malfunctioning, and we’ve been selected to win a real live job!

Not only are we the first human to receive a job in two decades, but we’re also getting an upgraded apartment with more than one room. What a treat! Border Bots is brimming with personality, sarcasm, and charm from the get-go. The game is packed with cute little robots like our faithful vacuum cleaner friend and worker bots that are… well, they’re a bit off some of them.

Our new job has us manning a border inspection booth. You’ll need to check robots for the correct paperwork whilst maintaining a high rank in the inspection leaderboards, or else we’ll lose our new job and the perks that come with it.

In addition to checking documents and looking for contraband, Border Bots allows you to make use of a variety of gadgets such as 3D printers, stun guns, and even a barcode scanner. These gadgets will no doubt help to sniff out those pesky deviant robots. After all, free will is only deserved by humans.

TL;DR

Jam-packed with personality, great gameplay, and a pretty catchy soundtrack, Border Bots is well worth the wait.  You’ll never be too far from a quirky toaster or two, with sentient appliances at home and just plain weird robots at the border booth. All with colourful personalities.
