Story

Conscript hits the ground running almost immediately. We play as a French soldier writing home to mother and stationed in a trench near Verdun. With you is your brother Pierre. Suddenly, you are ordered to your post. On your way, you find that your brother has been attacked and is lying unconscious. Immediately, his attacker turns on you.

With no time to rest, an assault by the German forces has begun, and you must fend them off using any weapons you can find. Be it a rifle, machine gun, or even a shovel, you’ll need them to get through this.

After a short skirmish, the worst of it is over; you’ve fended off the advance for now, time to go to check on your brother Pierre. Thud! You’ve been hit with a shovel, and you awake in a pile of your dead comrades. This is where the real game begins.

Trapped in the trenches with the enemy, your only small mercy is that their numbers are stretched thin like yours. So, you have to hide and strike the enemy when they least suspect it.

Gameplay

Your main goal is to survive whatever situation that you are in. Scavenge supplies from barrels, bodies, and any other places you can find because you’re going to need them. This game really does emphasise the survival aspect of the survival horror genre.

You aren’t here to take down the full German army. You’re on your own, and you are alone, apart from one man. In exchange for the cigarettes, the man will sell you anything he can find and upgrade your weapons if you can get your hands on any parts.

The combat in Conscript is much the same as other survival horrors except in a top-down view. You can charge your weapons to make them powerful or accurate, and ammo is limited. So, you want to use melee as much as possible, despite the increased risk. Also, there’s no health indicators, so you don’t know how strong that enemy is. You’ll have to hit him until he falls down.

The combat is rewarding when you get good at dodging melee attacks and creating distance, though this doesn’t work on enemies with rifles, pistols, or worse. Tackling large groups isn’t advised, even two soldiers wielding shovels is a deadly encounter.
