Read on to see what you can expect from the game, and check out our PC recs.
I Can’t Shake that Feeling of Deja Vu
As the protagonist Colt, you only have one objective – break the time loop that is trapping the island of Blackreef. To achieve this, Colt will need to assassinate eight ‘Visionaries’ before the day resets and the cycle begins all over again.
You start each day stranded on the black shores of Blackreef Isle with only the basic weapons. Begin by exploring the island, harvesting residuum and completing missions. In no time at all, you will be unlocking some handy abilities such as infusion. Infusion allows you to permanently bind weapons meaning when the day resets, you will retain your gear. You won’t need to worry about wasting precious time by running around aimlessly trying to remember where you found your weapon of choice, they’ll be waiting for you on reset.
Become Superhuman
You will soon unlock slabs that will grant you supernatural abilities that will change the game completely. These powerful items give Colt access to a unique power giving him the upper hand against the Visionaries. The five slabs are acquired from completing the corresponding mission and killing the visionary. However, this is all dependent on you being in the right distract at the right time of day. One wrong move can change it all! What’s more, each slab comes with four unique upgrades that are unlocked by assassinating the visionaries across several loops. The more visionaries you kill, the more powerful Colt can become!
Colt can only have two slabs in his inventory whilst on a mission. This is where infusion becomes such an important mechanic in the game. You can drop a slab that you have already infused to replace it with one that you don’t own yet and infuse it when possible. You won’t lose your original abilities and you’ll gain a brand new one!
Infusion will also allow you to play around with the different combinations of abilities in all of the loops so you can find the ones best suited to your play style. If you are a fan of going in all guns blazing, you want to harness Karnesis and Havoc. You can jump right in the attack using a telekinetic body slam with the bonus of a defence buff. Or if you prefer to be stealthy, Aether and Shift are the two for you. The perfect combination of invisibility with teleportation means you can be the ultimate ninja by swiftly taking out your targets and staying hidden.
Knowledge is Power in Deathloop
Information is your currency in Deathloop.
Once you’ve gathered an arsenal of weapons and stolen your target’s powers, you can begin to explore Blackreef Isle deeper. Sneak around your target’s hideouts, go on a stakeout to learn their schedules or manipulate different time zones and weather discover hidden secrets. All will trigger new missions and strategies to beat the loop.
In no time at all, you will discover that Blackreef is split into four unique districts that are spread across different time periods. All of which are connected by a series of underground tunnels that act as a safe zone for players. Whilst this may seem simple to understand at first, there’s much more to discover. All of the districts have their own timeline that happens whether you are there to experience it or not. The choices you make in one district will affect another timeline later on in the cycle.
Similar to the individual districts, the Visionaries each have their own schedule that you can manipulate. The choices you make will move the Visionaries around the different districts like pieces on a chessboard. Each loop is designed to allow you to keep changing the timeline, manipulating the game board, until the perfect and most effective scenario pieces together. Only then will you be able to assassinate all eight targets and break the cycle.
Meet the Visionaries of Deathloop
The Visionaries are a group of eight pleasure-seekers who inhabit Blackreef Isle. The group consists of scientists, artists, party animals and assassins. Their only goal is to keep the infinite loop running, as a result, they are looking to assassinate Colt to prevent him from breaking the cycle.
The hedonistic pursuits of the Visionaries have attracted the attention of the Eternalists. A group of rich individuals who are there to relish in the party and cause chaos to try and stop Colt.
Watch out for Juliana
The feisty rival assassin, Juliana is the only other inhabitant who does not forget when the day resets. Juliana is the wildcard. Her sole focus is to assassinate and she won’t stick to one district of the island. She follows you all over Blackreef as you uncover secrets and plot ways to take down the Visionaries. She watches closely waiting for her perfect moment to pounce.
What’s more, Arkane has intelligently wrapped up single-player gameplay and the drama of multiplayer into one package. If you are playing in online mode, Juliana could be controlled by another player who has snuck into your game to cause mayhem. Playing as Juliana unlocks a separate game mode where you have new missions and objectives all about killing Colt.
But don’t worry! If you don’t like the sound of another player stepping on your toes, you can select Juliana to be AI-controlled instead.
