DOOM is credited with pioneering and popularising the FPS genre in the 90s. Now, DOOM + DOOM II has received a juicy update boasting enhanced visuals and new content.
With DOOM: The Dark Ages due in 2025, it is the perfect time for a franchise replay. id Software understood the assignment and has dropped an update for the classic DOOM and DOOM II combined release. This bundle includes original games, enhanced visuals, and new content. Twenty years on, and DOOM is the gift that keeps on giving.
DOOM + DOOM II Gameplay
Both originally released in the early nineties, DOOM and DOOM II see you play as an unnamed space marine, lovingly nicknamed Doomguy before officially becoming the Doom Slayer. The aim of the game? Fight back the hordes of Hell.
As a space marine, you are the toughest of the tough. Equipped with an exciting arsenal of weapons, you must work your way through a variety of levels. DOOM is presented in three episodes whereas DOOM II plays as a continuous sequence of linked levels. Each level is packed with fearsome monsters, challenging terrain, and even labyrinthine layouts to boggle the mind. You must find the exit to progress to the next level, but there are plenty of hidden rooms and secret areas to discover along the way.
DOOM + DOOM II Update
Of course, DOOM has been out for twenty-plus years now, you know all this. What we’re here for is the spicy update dropped earlier this month. We’ve got more details below, but first, the trailer to get your blood pumping!
Game Contents
More than just the first and second game, the DOOM + DOOM II update includes:
- DOOM
- DOOM II
- Master levels for DOOM II
- TNT: Evilution
- The Plutonia Experiement
- Sigil
- Legacy of Rust
This isn’t even mentioning the new multiplayer content, which we will get to in its own dedicated section!
In addition to reliving classic content, this bundle features some all-new stories to experience. DOOM includes the fourth episode, Thy Flesh Consumed, whilst the DOOM II master levels include twenty fresh levels to complete! Each was crafted by independent designers with supervision from id Software, so you can experience iconic hell-spawned horrors and the base game action with a fresh take.
Sigil was originally a mod, designed by id Software co-founder John Romero. It features eighteen maps and fits between the first two games narratively. Both TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment were originally IWADs, each forming one half of Final Doom – a compilation of two stand-alone games.
Best of all, Legacy of Rust is an all-new episode, created in collaboration by individuals from Nightdive Studios, Machine Games, and id Software. It is the first official episode since DOOM II to feature new demons and weapons, which is exciting stuff indeed. Plus, there are sixteen new maps and the game is split into two acts: The Vulcan Abyss and Counterfeit Eden.
Plenty of gaming content to sink our teeth into!
Game Enhancements
In addition to all this new content, some serious enhancements have been implemented too, bringing these beloved 90s games into the 21st century in style! Naturally, visuals have been boosted and you can play DOOM + DOOM II at up to 120Hz in 4K. Plus, you can choose to play with the original soundtracks or updated IDKFA versions scored by Andrew Hulshult, which includes brand new DOOM II recordings.
DOOM has a strong history of modding, which has been fully embraced. There is an in-game mod browser to find community published single-player mods. What’s more, this update is BOOM source compatible, making it possible for the hundreds of community-created mods made in the last twenty-five years to be published in-game.
Previously implements enhancements still stand too, like making gameplay smoother with a controller. Plus, accessibility options have been added to make DOOM a more enjoyable experience for everyone! Such features include increasing menu readability, assist with voice or text chat, and the choice to disable screen flash effects.
Already Own the Game?
If you already own DOOM or DOOM II, then you will receive this combined game update for free and still have access to the previously owned versions. This applies to games owned on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
Is DOOM + DOOM II Multiplayer?
DOOM + DOOM II gets a big, fat tick in the yes column under multiplayer. It already supported local split-screen co-op and Deathmatch modes with up to four players. Now, it’s moved online and added crossplay support, using a room code system. And it’s brought with it twenty-five new maps for Deathmatch, giving you a total of 43 to choose from.
Four players not enough for you? On split-screen co-op, you can game with up to eight players. With online gameplay, this increases up to sixteen players! It should be noted that PlayStation only supports up to four players on split-screen.
Co-operative gameplay has been given a spruce, too. New rules have been implemented to improve everyone’s experience, including how respawning operates.
What Platforms Can I Play DOOM + DOOM II On?
For those who didn’t already own DOOM or DOOM II, the combo release is available for purchase on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
