It feels like we’ve been speculating about what The Sims 5 could be for an eternity. It’s actually only been eight years. Which is still somehow unbelievable. But at long last, EA have given us our very first taste of what the future holds with their reveal of Project Rene.
Although they haven’t officially called it The Sims 5, opting to only refer to it as the next generation Sims Game. But we know a sequel when we see one! Here’s everything that was revealed to us about Project Rene during this past week’s Sims Summit.
Why Are They Calling Sims 5 ‘Project Rene’?
Codenames are nothing new in the world of gaming. We’ve seen many developers use working titles both internally and publicly to discuss projects still in production. After all, it’s possible that the game won’t be called Sims 5 if they take the franchise down the game-as-a-service route it’s creeping into with Sims 4 going free-to-play.
As for this name in particular, VP for Franchise Creative Lyndsay Pearson explained it best during the reveal;
“We chose Project Rene because it’s reminiscent of words like “renewal”, “reneissance”, “rebirth” – and it represents our renewed commitment to The Sims. And that’s what we’re doing! We’re ushering in a new future for The Sims with a new game experience and more.”
All-New Creative Tools
One of the two big talking points for Project Rene was the impressive new arsenal of creative tools on display. From impressive interior design to astounding architecture, the design options offered through Build Mode have always been one of the series’ key selling points. With Sims 5 set to let you change the physical shape of objects in game, customisation is going to expand beyond just colours and patterns.
While still very early in development, an impressive array of furnishings was shown off in decorating mode. This included sofas with pillows that could be moved dynamically and were customised separately. Also shown off were beds with footboards that could be changed at will.
Play With Your Friends
Sims 4 helped put greater focus on its community with the Gallery letting players share their creations with the world. Project Rene is going to push what you can do with your friends even further. You can still play the game by yourself, or you and your friends can collaborate to create together in real time. But that’s not even the best part.
Lyndsay Pearson went on to confirm that Sims 5 will be supported across multiple platforms and devices. That means you can have the same experience across different screens! It’s still to be confirmed how far this crossplay will extend, but it’s an exciting step forward for the series nonetheless.
When Will Sims 5 Be Released?
If you are looking forward to getting your hands on the game, then the bad news for you is that Sims 5 is still a way off. Pearson indicated that Project Rene is still in the earliest possible stages of development to close her presentation;
“I’ll say this one more time before I go. This is super early for us and we’ve never shared information about our games years before they launch to the world. We’re so excited to take you on this journey with us!”
Additionally, it was confirmed two expansion packs would release for The Sims 4 in 2023. That would indicate EA is not slowing down on content for the current title just yet. We won’t see Sims 5 any time before 2024 and even that may just be when we get our next big update on Project Rene’s progress.
What Gaming PC Will Be Best for Playing Sims 5?
While it’s hard to call what Sims 5 will demand from your gaming PC, we can take an educated guess. With Sims 4 receiving an update to its minimum and recommended system requirements, you’ll be safe for Project Rene with one of these powerhouse PCs that smashes those specifications.
