Everything You Need to Know About Frostpunk 2

Since it was first announced in August 2021, we have been impatiently waiting for Frostpunk 2 to hit our gaming PCs.

It was initially supposed to launch in July 2024, but a short two-month delay was required after some beta feedback. But now, the official launch date is here, and we’ve got everything you need to know about Frostpunk 2 – including some of the best PCs to play it on.

Frostpunk 2 Gameplay

Frostpunk 2 is a survival city-builder by 11 bit studios. Gameplay is set 30 years after an apocalyptic blizzard that ravaged the Earth and plunged it into a never-ending winter. (Anyone else got Let It Go in their head now?) You play as the city’s Steward, managing resources and factions of people so that your dwelling may develop, expand, and advance. But, peril and dissent surrounds you on all sides. Do you have what it takes to make your city thrive?

The City Grows

With the world gripped by eternal winter, the city is the only safe place for humanity to live. In order for your metropolis to grow, you must gather resources, like coal and food, to keep your city running and people fed. You will need to balance a variety of districts, ensuring there is enough housing and work to sustain the populace. There are even specialised buildings for crafting new laws and proposing projects for the betterment of your settlement.

Of course, growth also means expansion, and you must send colonies out into the frostland to establish new cities in resource rich areas. Growing cities mean more people, and they become more challenging to govern and satisfy as they branch out into various factions. You must think carefully about your allegiances, as one friendship could trigger discontent with the others.

Game Modes

There are two game modes to explore and master in Frostpunk 2. The first is the multi-chaptered story mode saga. Spanning years, this campaign takes you through the burdens of leadership, bearing responsibility for thousands of lives.

Alternatively, you can play the sandbox mode called Utopia Builder. This features infinite play time, facilitating the freedom to explore boundless social and infrastructural experiments.

FrostKit

The other exciting thing about Frostpunk 2 is that it is launching with an official modding tool, called FrostKit. We love seeing the creative things you guys do with games, and having official channels to work with makes it all the better. It was a highly requested feature on the previous game, but not feasible thanks to the in-house engine. Frostpunk 2, however, was built in Unreal Engine, which better facilitates modding.

You can create custom maps, models, and scenarios to share with fellow gamers. Make your cities ancient or cosmic – you have the tools, let your creativity fly!

Best of all, 11 bit studios is aware this is their first foray into modding tools, so they will be taking on feedback to update and improve the experience for all. To start with, a beta version was thoroughly tested by select members of the modding community ahead of the launch, to provide insight on what has (or hasn’t) worked so far.
