Get ready for an adventure 20,000 leagues under the sea!
Thalassophobia is the fear of the ocean or deep bodies of water. Trigger warning, if that’s you, give this blog post a miss. But if your inner merfolk longs to be beneath the waves, then we’ve got the selection of games for you! Each of these has been picked for their outstanding deep sea gameplay and covers a variety of genres, so there’s something for everyone.
Subnautica
Subnautica takes you under the sea in an alien ocean, after your spaceship crash lands. If you are ever to survive on this strange land, you must explore the surrounding area and build up a home base. Whether diving or piloting a sub, there are beautiful ecosystems to discover, from lush coral reefs to the terrifying depths. You’ll have to outsmart the local fauna, too, as there are many scary creatures out there who don’t want to be disturbed. And once the sun goes down, the predators will come out to play.
It’s more than the critters you’ll be fighting, however. The deeper you go, the more pressure there is; so, you’ll need to develop your tools, suits, and watercraft to deal with this crushing weight. Plus, you’ll need to make sure you have all the resources you need to survive, especially if you want to make it off this planet alive.

That, and the bonkers sense of humour!

Maneater
Now, I don’t normally advocate the depiction of sharks as mindless maneaters, they are magnificent creatures that are vital to their ecosystems. But there is a very real, child-like joy at the prospect of playing as a shark that can shoot lasers from its mouth. Plus, it is narrated by voice acting legend, Chris Parnell. What’s not to love?
Maneater is the ultimate power fantasy. You play as an apex predator, terrorising coastal waters in the name of revenge against the fishermen who maimed you. An open world action RPG – or ShaRkPG as Tripwire Interactive like to call it – there are seven large regions to explore and tear through. As you chomp your way through fish, divers, whales, and more, your shark will grow. You can even find shark loot to evolve down one of many paths, elevating your destructive power. Like I said, laser shooting sharks. If that is not whimsical joy, I don’t know what is.

Raft
Our final pick is set mostly on the ocean’s surface, but you need what lies beneath to survive. In Raft, you are set adrift on, well, a raft. In order to survive, you must make this raft your home, building it up to keep you alive as you search for signs of civilisation. Initially armed only with a plastic hook, you must reel in drifting resources or dip below the waves to scavenge the reef. But beware, there is a rogue shark hellbent on reducing your chances of survival.
As you search for dry land, you’ll uncover the story of what happened to previous inhabitants and the next destination to chart a course to. You can play this adventure solo or team up with friends in online co-op – there’s safety in numbers after all!
