Lunar New Year is upon us, and we are entering the Year of the Snake.

To celebrate, we’ve put together a round-up of five games that feature or are themed on snakes that you can play. Of course, we’d love to hear your suggestions too, so be sure to drop those in the comments below!
Year of the Snake
January 29th 2025 marks the Lunar New Year. It is the Year of the Snake, based on the Chinese zodiac, and this year’s element is wood. The wood snake is a charming, intelligent, and creative sign, but can also be secretive, cunning, and sometimes ruthless. Sounds like the perfect recipe for a game if you ask me!
As such, our selection of snake-themed games is charming yet challenging.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version
First up, we have Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version. You play as Snake in this pioneering 3D stealth game series in a story filled with intrigue and betrayal. Revolutionary for its time, Metal Gear Solid brought us live action footage, cinematic cut scenes, and the threat of war and nuclear weapons, all tied together with innovative gameplay.
The Master Collection includes the first and second Metal Gear Solid games, VR and special missions, and digital copies of the screenplay and master book for each game.

Runa & the Chaikurú Legacy
Runa & the Chaikurú Legacy is a 3D platformer set in the ruins of the ancient Chaikurú civilisation. Inspired by beautiful Latin American culture and scenery, this game offers a vast world to explore, plenty of puzzles to solve, and a variety of fantastic enemies to fight with you boleadoras. As you progress, unlock mystical skills that alter the very environment around you, to reach new places and discover artefacts from an ancient world.
Earning its spot in this list, the first chapter of this game includes a boss battle with Anaconda, a giant stone snake with glowing purple crystals on its body.

Snake
Naturally, we can’t list a whole bunch of snake games without giving due respect to the noughties mobile classic, Snake. Anyone who experienced the golden era of Nokia phones will have played this simple yet addictive game. While I’m sure a Nokia 3310 would still work today, Snake can be played on Steam now. Developed and published by Romans I XVI Gaming in 2020, this version of Snake includes the classic game mode which can be played at one of three speeds – slow, medium, or fast.
On top of this, you can play the Open Mode, which is classic without the walls allowing you to wrap around the screen like in Snake 2, and Levels Mode. This is new to the Steam version of Snake, with twelve levels to master. Each has its own obstacles, like additional walls and portals, to make every level a unique challenge. Plus, you have to achieve a certain score on each to unlock the next – truly putting your skills to the test.

Does mobile gaming compare to PC?
Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King
Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King is a twofer remake of the 16-bit 90s classics. We’ve mostly picked it for the Aladdin gameplay, but I’m sure a snake or two appears in The Lion King as well.
Of course, the first Aladdin film’s final confrontation sees Jafar turn into a giant snake and the companion 2D platformer game uses this on the final level. Provided you make it that far. In true retro game fashion, this retelling of Aladdin’s classic adventure does not hold your hand in any way and you must jump, dodge, fight, and carpet ride your way through challenging levels and boss battles. Personally, I never made it past the spitting camels (but then my gaming skills should never be the yard stick).
As a remaster, however, there are quality-of-life updates you can take advantage of, like the added save feature the originals never had and difficulty settings. (I still think the camels would get me though…)

LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures
Our final pick is LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures. This game retells the original Indiana Jones trilogy in true, tongue-in-cheek LEGO style. With more than sixty playable characters to unlock and choose from, each level is packed with puzzles, enemies, and things to collect. Plus, with areas that you cannot access until you attain certain characters, there is plenty of replay value.
Now, why has this game made it onto our snake list? Well, Indiana Jones hates snakes. When you play as Indy, if you go near a snake he will tremble in fear because why did it have to be snakes?
