What’s the Story in God of War?
Set in a world inspired by Norse Mythology, players take on the role of the eponymous Spartan, Kratos. After killing off the entire Greek pantheon, he moved to Midgard (or at least Scandanavia). There he married Faye, with whom he had a son, Atreus. After her death, Kratos and his boy set off to fulfil her last wish and scatter her ashes from the highest peak in the Nine Realms. What starts as a classic father-son bonding trip soon turns into something more – beset by ancient horrors, mystical entities, and the Aesir gods themselves.
Wait, I Thought There Already Was a God of War?
Don’t let the name fool you – this God of War is the eighth instalment in the franchise but the first to not be set in a world inspired by Greek mythology. Originally released for the PS4 in 2018, its debut makes it the only game in the series to be officially released on the PC. It is, however, the seventh exclusive title Sony have brought to PC, joining other epic stories such as Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn. Huzzah!
Although it continues the story of the original PlayStation trilogy, you won’t need to go back and play those games. You can jump in right here. Exploring Kratos’s past and identity through his son’s eyes is a big part of the game’s narrative. Developers Santa Monica have used that as an opportunity for new players to learn the franchise’s history along with Atreus.
What Will I Be Doing Across the Nine Realms?
God of War’s action-adventure gameplay comes at you at one of two main speeds. First is combat, which employs weapon and hand-to-hand combo-based mechanics to battle enemies. Second is the exploration and puzzle elements you encounter over multiple interlinked map areas. You’ll be able to mould Kratos into your ideal berserker as you hack and smash your way across Midgard thanks to RPG-inspired character building. This will also apply to Atreus, your AI combat companion whose capabilities develop as you go deeper into the narrative. The entirety of the game is presented as a continuous shot, free of camera cuts and loading screens. This creates a one-of-a-kind immersive experience for players not found in any other game.
