It’s time to goofy goober rock back to Bikini Bottom, with the brand-new SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake.
It’s no secret we love a bit of SpongeBob SquarePants at Overclockers UK. If you’ll recall, there was great excitement over the Minecraft SpongeBob DLC. Well, now our favourite fry cook is back in a brand-new adventure that crosses dimensions, and right into our hearts. SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is set to fill our gaming PCs with the whimsy and madness we live for. If Battle for Bikini Bottom is anything to go by, we can expect some surprisingly challenging gameplay. (I was literally twelve when that game came out, I may be remembering it as harder than it was, ok?)
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake
In SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, you play as everyone’s favourite yellow sponge after he and Patrick get their hands on wish-granting Mermaid Tears. They then inevitably proceed to unravel the fabric of the universe and open up portals to Wishworlds. A fairly standard day in Bikini Bottom by all accounts. Familiar faces have gotten stuck within these weird and wacky worlds, and it’s up to you to save them all.
Each Wishworld is unique and more bizarre than the last. To effectively traverse the puzzle-platformer levels, you must don a spongetastic costume. Wear protective karate gear in the karate Wishworld, become SpongeGar from the classic time travel episode, and there is even a SnailBob costume for the Wishworld filled with other prehistoric snails. (Like I said, whimsy and madness.)
For anyone familiar with previous games, the mechanics and features of gameplay are pretty similar. From the trailer, we can see there are at least two giant slides, combat using a bubble wand, and lots of combo-jump moves, like Fishhook Swing and Karate Kick. All staples of SpongeBob gameplay. New to this game is Balloon-Patrick, your constant companion throughout the game. Voiced by Bill Fagerbakke, no less. In fact, all the cast regulars lend their iconic voices to this game.
In total, there are seven Wishworlds to explore and over thirty costumes to collect. With names like Wild West Jellyfish Fields and Hallowe’en Rock Bottom, we’re eager to get our fins on this game!
Where Can I Play SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is available to play on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. You can pick it up from both Steam and Epic Games. This game was also released on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in October 2023, and for mobile on both iOS and Android in December 2023.
Gameplay is single-player only, but there’s nothing stopping you from streaming your adventures across the Wishworlds!
