Yooka-Laylee Review by Emma
Yooka-Laylee is a charming 3D platformer, released by Playtonic Games in 2017 as a successor to the popular, RareWare classic, Banjo-Kazooie series.
The game follows the lizard-bat duo that is Yooka and Laylee, as they travel across different lands to retrieve the ‘One Book’, stolen by the evil Capital B and the Hivory Towers Corporation, as a part of their ploy to rid the world of all books and to gain a monopoly.
In search of answers, the duo must enter the Hivory Towers Corporation and explore various levels to regain the fallen “Pagies” from the One Book. Yooka-Laylee is reminiscent of classic 00’s collect-to-progress games. Pagies are one of the main forms of currency within the game, obtained by completing puzzles and challenges. These unlock further levels and additional areas.
Moves and abilities are gained temporarily by eating berries or can be learnt from various characters, each with their own currency and speciality. Abilities and enhancers are offered in exchange for specific items, helping you to access hidden Pagies and better attack enemies. Ability usage is measured on a power metre that can be restored by collecting butterflies. Alternatively, the butterflies can be eaten with a satisfying flick of Yooka’s tongue to regain health.
Yooka-Laylee is very child-like in its art style adopting a vibrant colour palette, rounded edges, and quirky cartoon-like character design. Characters include scientist Dr Puzz an octopus, Vendi a talking vending machine, and Trowzer, the salesman snake armed with a phone stereotypical of an 80’s businessman and trousers!
Although the voice audio may be described as mumbling, the written dialogue throughout the game is filled with sarcastic commentary and corny puns – perfect for a game targeted at all-age audiences.
Yooka-Laylee is a light-hearted, vivid, 3D platformer, full of silly quips and problem-solving challenges. The storyline is simplistic, typical within its genre, but is a welcome break from heavier storylines. There’s even the option for up to four players, to add to the fun!

Demon Turf Review by Liam
In Demon Turf, the ultimate girl boss, Beebz, prepares to take over the Demon World to become the Demon Queen. Take down gangs of nasties and the Demon King on your way to the top.
Run, jump, spin, and punch your way across the Demon World as you defeat the nasties. With satisfying platforming that leaves you wanting to speedrun through the entire game, the intricate level design challenges you to use all of your moves and mechanics as you traverse hard platforming sections.
Combat is not the core focus of the game. Use your moves to quickly dispatch enemies and overcome the obstacles they create so that you can progress past them. Ready to take down each gang’s boss at the end of the levels.
Demon Turf has a very cool art style; combining pixel art with low-poly 3D models creates a very nostalgic feeling, which feeds my love for classic 3D platformers. The characters are all drawn as 2D models who all follow the player, including Beebz.
Each NPC has unique dialogue, offering cheesy humour that touches the same notes as classic 3D platformers. All characters are voiced, from the main character and villains, right down to the townspeople populating the areas.
The base game offers a photo mode where you can hunt out unique hidden locations or just simply take pictures of the stylish environments. Plus, the level creator allows you to create and share your own custom designs using premade assets or your own.
It also comes with a massive amount of extra content, including two other games, Demon Turf: Neon Splash and Demon Turf: Tower. Neon Splash is a momentum-based, speed-focused game where carrying your momentum gives you bigger rewards and more prestige on the leaderboard. Tower is a roguelike game where you start with no powers and have to climb to unlock your powers to beat a truly tough challenge.
Demon Turf is a great game with smooth platforming that allows for great speedrunning and mechanical expression. Its art style and writing are unique, helping to keep you hooked across the Demon World.

Blossom Tales II: The Minotaur Prince Review by Emily
Blossom Tales II: The Minotaur Prince is sequel to Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King. It sees our beloved hero Lily don her sword and shield once more, to rescue her brother, Chrys, from the Minotaur King. Who she accidentally summoned in frustration at her brother.
This game immediately sets up a rich narrative, with the mechanic of present day Lily and Chrys being told a story by their Grandpa. We are thrown into the vibrant, colourful world of Blossomdale and quickly move from enjoying the Minotaur Moon festival to being on a full-blown quest. All with commentary and input from kids and Grandpa.
With its Zelda vibes, Blossom Tales II provides satisfying dungeon puzzles, challenging bosses, and a great map with plenty to explore. Including those hard-to-reach areas that you have to access from another tile on the map, just to get that tantalising treasure.
The hack-and-slash combat is fast paced yet requires more than the good ol’ “go in and hit” tactic. You have an arsenal of tools at your disposal, from your sword and shield to an enchanted lamp, each primed to conquer various monsters. Should you run out of life in combat, well, Grandpa just needs to re-find his place in the story and then play will continue on! (Oh yes, I was very grateful for this mechanic. Those boss fights were tough!)
Pairing free exploration with a question-driven narrative, Blossom Tales II will keep you in your gaming chair saying, “Just one more quest. Just one more new area!”

A Little Golf Journey Review by Rob
A Little Golf Journey is a beautiful and relaxing golf game played across a diorama of courses and various destinations. Discover treasure, take on challenges, and unlock secrets. There’s no need to bring a caddie, your golfing journey awaits.
Probably the most relaxing game of golf you’ll play this year, A Little Golf Journey blends puzzles, charming scenery, mysteries, and more across ten stunning courses and over 100 holes.
Straight from the tutorial, you’re hit with a calming soundtrack and an invitation from the mysterious X to prove your skills to join an exclusive club. Thankfully, no matter how bad you are at golf, you can still make it into the club. We’d rather not share how long we spent on the tutorial level. Completing levels brings colour and life to the game’s map and level selection screen, alongside messages from our strange benefactor X.
A Little Golf Journey’s maps each bring with them unique challenges, including sand pits, water, and of course, hidden shortcuts. Like every golf game ever, the less shots it takes you to get the ball into the hole the better you are… We were not very successful golfers the majority of the time, and we didn’t even care. Not happy with your star rating? Then, simply take the level again and again, trying out different techniques.
“Apprentices don’t think. They golf.” – X
It is alarmingly easy to lose hours of your evening to A Little Golf Journey, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Lil Gator Review by Ruth
Lil Gator is an adorable 3D platformer in which your main objective is to distract your older sister (sound familiar?), who is far too busy with schoolwork to play. You play as a child alligator and must team up with your friends to create adventures spread across all over the island, to get your sister in the mood for some childish fun.
The gameplay is wholesome and the controls simple to follow. It utilises the traditional WASD keys, with the occasional pop-up directing you to which keys to press to talk to friends or interact with the world. As you explore, you’ll need to complete quests and help out your friends with their problems. Just remember, no grown-up stuff allowed! Completing these quests or helping your friends will unlock items to aid you in your adventures. This ranges from a shield to slide down hills, a glider to take you to the skies, and an axe to help you defeat those cardboard monsters.
As the true annoying little sibling you are, you send consistent updates to your sister. This appears as text messages and adorable selfies sent via phone which will pop up on screen.
In addition to this, scattered throughout the island are memories of you playing with your old sister. Each memory serves you a big ol’ helping of childhood nostalgia. Reminding you of days spent outdoors, exploring, and playing with friends. What’s more, the game is set during fall break with the open world packed full of cosy autumnal vibes. From falling leaves to red and yellow trees. I can’t wait to pick this game up again on those gloomy rainy Autumn days when I need a little pick me up.
All in all, Lil Gator is the ultimate wholesome adventure game. It’s perfect for gamers, like me, who just can’t enough of those cosy vibes and prefer games with a simple storyline and easy-to-use controls. As you explore, complete the quests, and immerse yourself in those childhood feels, it’s easy to shut your brain off and just enjoy the gameplay. Sounds like a fun Friday night to me!
CorpoNation Review by Simon
CorpoNation: The Sorting Process is a narrative-driven game much akin to Papers Please. You are placed into a Ringo company cubicle. Ringo cares about its employees, providing you with work, a room, plenty of company merchandise to buy, and even company-sanctioned games to play. Remember: Work Hard.
You must sort samples by dragging them from three inputs and dropping them into one of four outputs, Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Zeta. (Just don’t ask what happens to them.) You may need to change up your workflow, say one of the output tubes breaks, then you’ll have to dispose of the samples for that pipe down the waste chute. Don’t worry, your manager will keep you informed of any changes through your daily briefings. Make sure to put in 110% to earn your daily credits, and maybe receive a promotion in your weekly performance review.
With your credits, you can pay for your necessities and luxuries. There’s rent and maintenance, as well as your company provided food pills. Don’t worry if they’re rationed, it’s for the good of the company. After that’s all paid, Ringo provides you with plenty of ways to relax. How about some retail therapy? With access to the companies’ online store, you can decorate your room to your heart’s content with Ringo’s amazing line of accoutrements.
Alternatively, you can spend time reading the news, about all the goings on in the world, like Ringo’s CEO being voted best boss for the twentieth year running. If you’re a gamer, then there are company-approved games, even a companywide leaderboard to climb.
Need some company? Then your cohort is there for you, three other colleagues who will chat about anything with you, from your workday, to how your gaming is going. Beyond this, there is the company email system, keeping you up to date with everything you need to know, just remember to report any suspicious activity for the good of Ringo.
Now I’m off to sort some more samples – remember friends, Work Hard.
