Update 05/12/23

Grand Theft Auto Six has been officially revealed, with Rockstar unveiling the first trailer for GTA VI. Whilst we’re working with pretty limited info at the moment, Grand Theft Auto Six’s first trailer has revealed we’re heading back to the Miami-inspired Vice City. What’s more, it looks like there is going to be a huge map to explore in GTA VI. In the trailer, we saw everything from the beaches and city, all the way to the Everglades.

Rockstar Won’t Let You Play GTA VI

After nearly a decade of next-gen upgrades and free updates, Rockstar has finally confirmed they will be putting Grand Theft Auto V out to pasture and are working on GTA VI. It’s still anyone’s guess if we’ll see that or Elder Scrolls VI first, but it’s nice to see the industry finally moving on from the early 2010’s either way. Like Bethesda though, Rockstar has kept details scarce for this announcement. But what little details they have shared are more than enough to start looking ahead, wide-eyed, to GTA VI and the franchise’s future.

What Rockstar Have Said About GTA VI

Before we take too sharp a right into Speculation Station, let’s just check in with what Rockstar actually said about the next game in the Grand Theft Auto series in their February 4th Community Update.

“With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.”

What We Can Expect for GTA VI?

Any and all speculation is going to be mired by one little phrase. Rockstar only called this “the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series” and not GTA VI. The implication though is that it will indeed be a mainline entry regardless of name. So, it will be a sequel even if it lacks Roman numerals slapped on the end, much like San Andreas and Vice City.

Speaking of Vice City, that has long been talked about as the likeliest setting for GTA VI. The Miami-inspired city has not featured outside of spin-offs since 2002’s eponymous game. That is just a rumour though. The same is true for everything else, from what decade the game will be in, how many protagonists will be, to having a playable female character for the first time. All talked about for years, but none of it officially confirmed.

Stepping away from rumours, it will likely be a while before we see GTA VI. After all, Grand Theft Auto V was revealed officially in late October 2011 before launching in September 2013. I remember it well – it was a Tuesday and I didn’t sleep. Conservatively we could expect to see GTA VI in a similar time frame, meaning a possible 2024 release. Of course, nothing has been shown of the game yet so that is wishful thinking at best and a waste of your magical lamp at worst. Hopefully the PC release will be far closer to the console release than it was for GTA V

What Does this Mean for GTA V and GTA Online?

In the same Community Update, Rockstar were clear they hadn’t forgotten their other kids. Most attention was paid to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S release of Grand Theft Auto V on March 15th 2022 and what players could expect. New graphics modes with up to 4K resolution, 60 frames per second, texture and draw distance upgrades, HDR options and ray tracing, as well as technical advancements with hardware are all available for GTA V’s third console generation.

GTA Online will continue to be supported, of course. Rockstar is even offering a new standalone version for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S owners, with the former getting it for free for the next three months. Whether PC gamers will see this option or not has not been mentioned, but it would certainly be exciting if it did. Perhaps it could evolve into a free-to-play game independent of GTA VI
