Packaging

There’s nothing worse than ordering something, only for it to arrive looking like it’s gone ten rounds with a heavyweight boxer. That’s where decent packaging can make all the difference, and HAVN has done an excellent job with this.

My case arrived and it was obvious the courier had done what couriers do best. The corners had those signs that it had landed on them a few times, the walls of the box had a few small dents, and the tape was slightly frayed on the top and bottom. But the case itself was pristine when I removed it.

The carton the case is contained in is nice and thick, utilising double wall cardboard, perfect for protecting the chassis when in transit. Inside the box, the case is held in place by two PE foam inserts. These are formed from multiple strips of foam that are between 40-50mm thick and are perfect for absorbing any knocks the container may take. Carved into the top insert is a cavity, which securely holds the user manual and accessories box. Furthermore, the tempered glass airflow panel is cushioned using this foam as well, within its own box secured inside the chassis itself.

Build Quality

You can tell the HAVN HS 420 VGPU is a premium case from when you first pick it up… or may I suggest having two people pick it up initially, as it is a chonky boy. When in the cardboard carton, the HS 420 VGPU weighs in at an impressive 22kg, so be careful when you handle it.

The reason the HAVN HS 420 VGPU is so heavy is because of the materials utilised in its construction. The case is manufactured from steel and tempered glass, and not the thin type found in some cases, either. I’d estimate that the thickness used for the metal pieces are around 1.5mm thick, meanwhile the tempered glass is 5mm. This ensures that the case is very solid.

This emphasis on high quality materials continues inside the case. Each panel is manufactured from the same materials. Thanks to this, a gaming PC built in the HAVN HS 420 VGPU will be safe and secure from everyday knocks and bumps. In fact, it’s more than likely that anything knocking the HS 420 VGPU will come out worse!

In addition to keeping your components safe, the HAVN HS 420 VGPU ensures that your PC will be whisper quiet. You don’t have to worry about panels rattling around or vibrations from your fans being transferred around the case., HAVN has included many rubber grommets that dampen any vibrations from propagating throughout the chassis, alongside the magnets and screws that secure the panels in place.

Compatibility

No matter what hardware you may be rocking, the HAVN HS 420 VGPU is fantastic for building your dream gaming PC. The main chamber has ample space for even the largest components, including high-end motherboards. The HS 420 VGPU can easily facilitate an extra wide E-ATX model, thanks to its 277mm wide motherboard tray.

Alongside this, the 185mm of CPU clearance allows you to mount a large dual tower air cooler. With one of these coolers, or an AIO, you can master the thermals of the most powerful CPU from either AMD or Intel. Perfect for creating a solid foundation for a top-tier gaming PC or workstation. Additionally, with 470mm of GPU clearance and four to six expansion slots, there is plenty of space for any GPU currently available, including NVIDIA’s flagship RTX 4090.

The HAVN HS 420 VGPU also boasts excellent compatibility with multiple storage drives. To the right of the motherboard tray is a removable bracket, that boasts four drive cages. This can be utilised to house either four 3.5″ HDDs or eight 2.5″ SSDs, or a mix of each.

Alternatively, you can remove the drive cages, and the bracket can be used to mount up to three cooling fans. Alongside this side bracket, you can also install three more 120mm or 140mm fans at the top and bottom of the case, and two at the rear, for a total of 11 fans. Even better, each fan mount is designed for 140mm fans, but can be adapted to 120mm models instead, giving you plenty of options whether you prefer higher airflow or increased static pressure.

Finally, to power your computer, you can pick and choose from a wide array of power supplies. The 220mm clearance allows you to pick from almost any ATX, SFX, or SFX-L PSU available. This means you’ll have ample power delivery to supply all your hardware with the clean reliable energy it requires.

Ease of Building

Whether you’re an old hand at PC building or dipping your toe in for the first time, the HAVN HS 420 VGPU is a perfect choice. This chassis has everything an enthusiast has come to expect including, easily removed panels and brackets, ample access to every corner of the case, and an accessory kit. This contains all the bits and bobs you need, such as screws, standoffs, and cable ties. But it does have a few surprises an old hand might not expect, such as the anti-static gloves that offer extra grip. Perfect for safely removing the tempered glass panel.

Additionally, you will find a unique tempered glass airflow guide. This panel slides into place above the angled bracket for the bottom three fans and is secured in place with three screws. This ingenious piece of glass helps to direct cool air drawn through the base of the case and bounces it off the main glass panel. This channels air directly into your vertically mounted GPU, a mounting position that although looks great, traditionally is restrictive to airflow. As a result, you get the best of both worlds: a great-looking setup and excellent thermal performance!

Now for the beginner builder, HAVN has you covered, with a superb user manual and a SimpliCable routing system.

Whoever designed the manual has obviously taken inspiration from either Apple or Lego, as it boasts minimal instructions, instead opting to utilise highly detailed diagrams. With this manual, you can easily understand the nuances of building a PC, from how to correctly mount your motherboard to adjusting the side storage/fan bracket to your liking.

What’s more, with the HAVN HS 420 VGPU, I’m certain no first-time builder has ever had such tidy cables runs! The rear compartment features multiple labels that recommend the perfect way to run your wires to the correct components. Even better, you won’t miss them, as each sticker boasts a vibrant colour that stands out against either the black or white finish of the case. Oh, and there’s so much room to stuff the excess cables out the way, where nobody will ever see it, don’t worry.

Aesthetics

Now we gamers, we’re a fickle lot. We want both functionality and style when it comes to our PC case. HAVN understood the assignment, as they have produced a case that boasts both with the HS 420 VGPU.

The case I reviewed came in a black finish, with some highlights picked out in grey on the rubber grommets. If you’d prefer, though, you can also find this case available with a white finish.

Thanks to this, the HS 420 VGPU has a modern aesthetic that will look fantastic whether you’re using it for gaming or in a professional setting. The case features several subtle embellishments, such as the HAVN logo under the motherboard tray and HAVN printed at the top of the rear panel. The steel panels all feature a pleasing lozenge design cut into them that allows airflow in and out.

Gaming setup with a HAVN HS 420 VGPU case
90-degree bend of the UniSheet panel

As a fish tank style case, the HAVN HS 420 VGPU has glass on two sides of the case. However, unlike many contemporaries, this case uses a single piece of tempered glass – the UniSheet Glass. To accomplish this, the glass is bent at a 90-degree angle allowing it to cover both the front and side of the case. What’s more, HAVN has kept the bend as tight as possible, meaning there is minimal visual distortion when looking into the case from any angle.

Although there is no RGB lighting included, the HS 420 VGPU does offer plenty of space to accommodate RGB products, such as fans or lighting strips. Additionally, it includes an innovative bracket that replaces the side storage cages. This turns the side bracket into a VESA mount for a 14″ IPS display. A huge screen compared to those traditionally found inside PCs, allowing for a wider range of outputs to be shown including detailed PC system information, animations, images, and full-length videos.

HAVN HS 420 VGPU Conclusion

As a first release for a company, HAVN has knocked it out of the park with the HS 420 VGPU. This is a case that has it all: premium build quality, gorgeous aesthetics, excellent hardware compatibility, fantastic cooling performance, and super easy to build in. I can easily see this being favourably compared to excellent cases, such as Lian Li’s O11 Series and the Phanteks NV range.
