Are you looking to sell your gaming PC for a few extra pennies? Are you unsure how much your PC is worth? If the answer is yes – then keep on reading!
We’ve created this blog post to help you determine how much your PC is worth, listing all the key factors that can influence pricing, with a helpful case study showcasing an example, and of course, some top PC recs for when you’re ready to upgrade.
How to Find Out How Much Your PC is Worth
How much your PC is worth depends on multiple factors – what hardware you have, how old it is, if any components are still in warranty, and how much you have used your PC. For example, if you have a GPU that is a few generations old or perhaps you’ve used your PC extensively for years, you can’t really expect your PC to fetch the same price as one that has only been used for a few weeks.
The best way to find out how much your PC is worth is to use an online price calculator. These have been designed to find out the minimum and maximum price of either an individual component or your entire PC. These calculators, however, won’t consider any secondary factors such as the condition of your hardware. So, you’ll have to consider these when it comes to creating your listing. We also recommend that you browse popular websites such as eBay or Facebook Marketplace to get a better sense of what others are selling their PC for, especially if their spec is very similar to yours, and how quickly their PCs sell.
How Much Is My PC Worth: A Case Study
Unfortunately, without knowing what hardware you have, we can’t give you a definitive answer on how much your PC is worth. However, we have created our own example using PC Part Picker.
PC Spec |
---|
Intel i7 14700K |
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Halo 51.88 CFM CPU Cooler |
Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite X ATX LGA 1700 Motherboard |
Kingston Fury Beast 16GB DDR5 RAM |
Crucial BX500 1TB 2.5’’ SSD |
MSI Ventus Black RTX 4060 Ti 8GB GDDR6 GPU |
Aerocool 850W 80 Plus Gold ATX Modular PSU |
Kolink Observatory MX ARGB ATX Black Mid Tower |
As you can see the typical market price for all this tech is £895.86*, so it’s safe to say this PC (when new) is worth exactly that much money. But let’s be honest… you aren’t buying this shiny new PC just to give it to someone else. We’ll need to take into account usage along with wear and tear.
Let’s say you’ve used this PC for over a year.
After a year of use, the hardware isn’t going to be factory fresh anymore and will already be using outdated hardware. In fact, new CPU and GPU launches are always just around the corner. Plus, your hardware’s performance will slowly degrade over time. In addition to this, we certainly could have done a better job of maintaining the dust filters and keeping it clean, so it’s looking a little dusty.
Taking all this into account, we’d safely estimate that this PC is worth around £780 (give or take). While it may have been used for a year, there’s still a lot of life left in this PC, and it has some great potential for future upgrades.
However, the Intel 14th Gen and NVIDIA RTX 40 Series is still a fantastic foundation. AAA games are now only just requiring an RTX 30 Series to run at recommended settings with realistic visuals. Therefore, you’ll be able to enjoy playing the next generation of AAA games for a good while yet. Plus, it’ll be easy to get this PC looking its best once again with some careful cleaning and maintenance.
Don’t Want to Sell?
If you don’t want to sell your old PC, there are still plenty of other options for recycling your unwanted hardware. This includes:
- Take it to a dedicated recycling centre.
- Look at manufacturer recycling schemes.
- Donate it to charities such as Computer Aid International or Little Lives UK.
You can read more about what you can do with your old hardware and why you should try to recycle your electronics over on the OcUK blog.
