If you need to factory reset your PC but don’t know how to do it – then look no further! Here at Overclockers UK, we’ve created this in-depth step-by-step guide on how to factory reset a PC
What is a Factory Reset?
A factory reset restores your PC to its original state as if you’ve just taken it out of the box. When you factory reset a PC, any data, personal settings, and programs that you have installed will be erased.
All the settings on the PC will be restored to the default.
When it comes to performing a factory reset, you will have two options.
- Remove everything installed – including files, settings, programs
- Remove everything installed and any settings but keep your personal files.
Factory Reset vs Restore:
A factory reset and restoring a PC are different. A restore is almost like an ‘undo’ button for your PC. It will return your computer back to working order without you having to reinstall the operating system.
A system restore creates a copy of the data on your PC and will keep all your existing files and programs.
Why Do I need to Factory Rest My PC?
Factory resetting a PC can help to resolve any performance issues. If you’ve noticed your PC is struggling to boot up or suffering from slow loading times, a factory reset will completely wipe the data on your PC that could be having an impact on performance.
Along with this, a factory reset is perfect for those looking to recycle their old PC and give it to another budding gamer. You won’t have to worry about them stumbling on any of your old files or personal information.
How to Factory Reset a PC
In Windows 10:
To factory reset in Windows 10, you will need to go into Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC.
In Windows 10, you can choose to either keep or remove all your data.
In Windows 11:
To perform a factory reset in Windows 11, you will need to go into Settings > System > Recovery. Here you will see an option to reset this PC.

Back-Up Your Data!
If you are planning on factory resetting your PC and want to keep your files, we would recommend that you also back up all of your data. This can be done either online, using OneDrive or Google Drive, or on an external hard drive.
