Intel recently rolled out a microcode update aimed at fixing a voltage instability issue affecting its 13th and 14th Generation Core processors. But what does that mean for you? In this article we’re explaining everything you need to know. 

Intel’s recent microcode update (version 0x129) addresses an issue with improper voltage requirements that caused elevated voltage levels, leading to potential system instability over time. In some cases, this problem even increased the minimum voltage (Vmin) needed for stable CPU function, which could compromise long-term reliability. 

What is Microcode and Why it Matters 

Microcode is essentially a set of low-level instructions that helps manage the processor’s internal functions. Stored in non-volatile memory, microcode can be updated post-manufacture to address bugs, security vulnerabilities, or performance issues. Simply put, a microcode update is not dissimilar to updating your anti-virus or Windows and allows the CPU to function as initially intended. Through these updates, Intel can provide crucial enhancements or fixes without physical hardware changes—meaning you get better stability and security.

Microcode updates are vital for maintaining:

How the Update Affects Performance and Overclocking 

While Intel’s internal testing shows the update has minimal impact on gaming and productivity applications like 3DMark, Cinebench, and Blender, there was a slight performance impact observed in specific titles such as Hitman 3: Dartmoor. However, this performance dip is minor for most users and keeps systems stable. 

For overclockers, the update doesn’t prevent pushing the CPU beyond Intel’s specified thresholds. By disabling specific BIOS settings, users can still achieve higher voltages, but Intel warns that exceeding the 1.55V cap could shorten CPU lifespan or void warranties.

How to Install the Update 

Intel is working with motherboard manufacturers to deploy this update via BIOS updates. Users of affected processors should check their motherboard manufacturer’s support page for the latest BIOS version to ensure this update is applied.
