Wahoo! It’s March 10th, which means it’s officially Mario Day, the joyous celebration of everybody’s favourite Italian plumber. This is a great time to get out your Nintendo Switch, get some friends over or jump online, and play your preferred mode of Mario. There are lots to choose from, so we’ll take you through everything going on in the Koopa Kingdom so you can live your best Mario Day.
What is Mario Day Anyway?
Mario Day is an annual celebration of the franchise that takes place every year on March 10th. That’s not because it’s the anniversary of the first game though, such is the case with Pokémon Day. Rather, much like Star Wars Day on May the 4th, it’s all about the power of the pun that is “Mar 10”. While it was first a fan-observed day to dress up in overalls and ruin friendships by way of Mario Kart, Nintendo started recognising the day officially in 2016. That means hosting Mario-themed events and promoting the latest games in the series.
What Mario Games Can We Look Forward To?
We’ve seen some amazing Mario titles drop over the last couple of years such as Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope in 2022, Super Mario Bros. Wonder in 2023, and Mario Vs Donkey Kong in 2024. Mario hasn’t been the only inhabitant of the Mushroom Kingdom to have had a game released recently, as Princess Peach has stared in her own title as well, Princess Peach: Showtime! But what does the future hold for the moustachioed plumber?
In 2024, Nintendo is planning on releasing a remaster of the classic GameCube RPG, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, where a flattened Mario must do his best to collect the seven Crystal Stars to save Princess Peach (again) from the X-Nauts. If you’re more partial to Mario’s younger brother, then rejoice as Luigi’s Mansion 2 is receiving an HD remaster as well, so grab your Poltergust 5000 and get ready to go searching for the shards of the Dark Moon once more.
What Are the Best Mario Games to Play?
As you would expect from any Nintendo console, the Switch is absolutely loaded with Mario content. Now you can never go wrong with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, as evidenced by the over 40 million copies sold. What better way to show your love for Mario than assaulting your nearest and dearest with a barrage of Blue Shells?
Maybe you’d prefer to steal all their coins after beating them in a unicycle race? Then lucky you, there are two games for that! Super Mario Party makes the best of the Joy-Con controllers to create motion control mayhem, while Mario Party Superstars blends classic boards and party games together so even Nintendo Switch Lite users can get in on the carnage.
For the traditional platform gamers among you, there is of course New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe to enjoy. But if you woke up today and chose chaos, then Super Mario Maker 2 and its myriad of improbable courses could be for you. Of course, there’s also a slew of classic content Nintendo Switch Online players can access if you really want to spend the day drenched in nostalgia.
