Gotta Find Mama

Within Miasma Chronicles, we follow the adventures of Elvis, a young mechanic living in Sedentary, and his robotic brother Riggs. They are looking for a way to break through the Miasma Wall, behind which their mother disappeared years before.

The key to this goal is Elvis’ glove, a mysterious device left to him by his Mama when she vanished. With this glove, Elvis will eventually be able to control the Miasma, a mysterious substance that corrupts everything it touches, but first, he needs to power it up and learn to control it.

On his journey, he will encounter enemies such as the Grabbers, a race of anthropomorphic frogs who worship the Miasma, and the Theevers, humans living outside of the established settlements who raid the caravans that run between them. During his adventures, Elvis will also have to contend with the First Family, a clandestine group that controls all the advanced technology left in the world. The First Family then distributes crumbs of aid to the settlements, in return they demand tributes, such as freshly mined gold.

Not everyone Elvis and Riggs meet is an enemy. In fact, there are many people just striving to survive who will lend a hand. This includes the townsfolk of Sedentary, like Mayor Moris. If you’re a fan of Futurama you’ll love his design, he’s a head in a jar! Or the Black Marketeer Vyse, who has some juicy upgrades for Elvis, as long as you can figure out how to break him free of his cell.

Elvis will also be joined in his journeys by companions willing to take up arms alongside the brothers. This includes Jade, an augmented human, a menace to her foes with her silenced sniper rifle and connection to the First Family.

A Treat for Tactical Fans

Anyone who has played an XCOM-style game will recognise the core gameplay of Miasma Chronicles. Combat plays out through a grid-based system, where characters each have a number of Ability Points they can spend on actions, such as movement, attacking, using special abilities, and throwing items. To help it stand out from other contemporaries, Miasma Chronicles uses several innovations.

Grid based combat
Classic grid-based combat

This includes using the same maps for both traversing the world and battling your enemies. While exploring, you can roam freely around without being locked to the grid. This helps to make the transition between exploration and combat smooth, as the developers have ensured that the maps are perfectly suited to both.

In addition to this, there is the Ambush system, which allows you to make combat that much easier by letting you pick off enemies before you fight the whole group. So long as Elvis or one of his companions has a silent weapon, you can attempt to eliminate lone foes.

What’s more, by throwing a glass bottle or having Riggs break a wooden barricade, you can make enough noise to draw an enemy away from the group, letting you get the jump on them. Using this to your advantage, you can turn a no-win scenario into a walk in the park.

Furthermore, Miasma Chronicles boasts RPG mechanics; when you kill enemies and complete quests, you’ll earn experience. When Elvis and his friends level up, they’ll increase in stats as well as earn points to spend in unique talent trees for each character. With this, they’ll be able to learn new abilities, such as Riggs becoming full cover for his allies or Jade being able to set her targets on fire.
