The spookiest night of the year is upon us, and what better way to spend Hallowe’en than with a whole bunch of new scary games?
October 2024 has seen an influx of horror games. Considering this is the time for ghosts and ghouls, it’s no surprise really. Not only have we seen the remaster of Silent Hill 2, but there has also been an interesting mix of 8-bit platformers, zombie hordes, and plenty of nightmare fuel to ruin any chance of sleeping soundly. (Look up the demo for Winnie’s Hole if you don’t believe me. Or maybe don’t, if you value the sanctity of your childhood.) We’re going to take a look at just five of these new horror games, so be prepared for a scare or two!
Until Dawn
Until Dawn used to be a PlayStation exclusive, but now it’s been rebuilt and enhanced for PC. Music to our ears. Relive the nightmare and enjoy this immersive story once more.
Eight friends have returned to an isolated lodge, where two of their group disappeared the year before. This mountain retreat quickly descends into a hellish nightmare, where every choice you make is a matter of life and death. There are wrong answers here! With new collectibles, updated visuals, and re-cut narrative sequences, Until Dawn is a strong start to your spooky gaming marathon!

RetroRealms: Ash vs. Evil Dead and Hallowe’en
Next, we have a twofer. RatroRealms Arcade connects select RetroRealm DLCs that you own and lets you play 16-bit reimagings of classic horror films and TV shows. Currently, this is Ash vs. The Evil Dead and Halloween. The ultimate mash-up of horror legends!
Both games are presented like classic side-scrolling arcade platformers, with pixel graphics and plenty of gore to create a fresh take on the genre. In Ash vs. The Evil Dead, you play as the eponymous Ash Williams, journeying through overlapping dimensions and fighting unspeakable horrors with his classic chainsaw. For Halloween, you step into the shoes of the killer, playing as Michael Myers in a world where hellish nightmares manifest. Better yet, there are leaderboards for both games, so you can see how your fighting skills compare to other players. Groovy!
Side note: if pixel graphic versions of classic Hallowe’en films are your jam, then you might be interested to know there is a Rocky Horror Picture Show game, too! It is a standalone game, and not part of RetroRealms.

No More Room in Hell 2
Rounding out our selection, we have No More Room in Hell 2, sequel to the much-loved 2013 zombie classic. With up to eight-player online co-operative gameplay, this is one you can enjoy with all your friends.
Playing as an emergency responder in this intense and terrifying game, you must work your way across a sprawling map infested with zombies in order to find your friends. You must survive, scavenge, and stockpile useful resources if you ever hope to be reunited. With more gear, your chances of making it out alive increase.
There are many ways to successfully tackle the game scenarios, but character permadeath means there will be fatal consequences if you make one wrong move. Plus, the undead will react to every move and noise you make. So, tread carefully, use your environment to distract, and even set a trap or two.
You can find your teammates using in-game proximity chat, there is safety in numbers after all. But, be warned. Should any responder die, all their progress is lost. This is a co-op with consequences.
