Heroes rejoice! After being announced way back at the XBOX Games Showcase in 2020, we finally have some more information about the new, upcoming Fable.
If you’re as excited as we are, you’ll want to know every single detail. There are a few juicy details about, so this is everything we know about Fable so far.
What is Fable?
Since it’s been over a decade since the last Fable game (try not to feel old, try not to feel old) some of you may be a little unfamiliar with this series. For those out the loop, Fable is fantasy RPG with a distinctly British identity. The first game was released in 2004 for the original Xbox and was developed by Lionehad Studios and master of overhyping Peter Molyneux.
While the original game became a bit of a meme for not meeting pre-launch promises – think No Man’s Sky without the redemption arc – an improved version was received more favourably, and the sequel of Fable II was widely lauded. A fun world, easy to pick up gameplay, sharp writing, and a stellar cast were all traits the third game carried. Sadly, after the 2012 Kinect exclusive Fable: The Journey and a remake of the first game, time caught up to Lionhead Studios.
After spinning their wheels on co-op only game Fable Legends for three years, Microsoft pulled the plug in 2016, cancelling the game and closing Lionhead Studios down for good. Thankfully, this was not the end of Fable’s story.
A Reboot is Coming…
Two years after rumours first started circulating, Microsoft confirmed that a new Fable game was in development under the helm of Playground Games. Another developer under the Xbox Games Studio, they’re otherwise best (and only) known for the entire Forza Horizon series. But that hasn’t stopped them from assembling one hell of a team to trade the steering wheel in for swords and sorcery.
First up is narrative lead Anne Megill, a former dev for Remedy Entertainment who knows a thing or two about storytelling with Alan Wake on their resume. She’s joined by Andrew Walsh, who was a senior writer for the spectacular Horizon: Forbidden West. Suffice it to say, there’s an enviable creative pedigree being assembled for the game, and the in-house engine in ForzaTech to power that ambition.
If that wasn’t enough, Playground Games is based in Leamington Spa here in the jolly UK. It’s an important note, as the wry whimsy and sarcasm of the Fable series has always been distinctly British with its Monty Python-esque style. And if you were afraid that wouldn’t be present…
The Return of Fable!
At the XBOX Games Showcase 2023, the first teaser trailer was released for the new Fable game. Featuring Richard Ayoade as vegetable enthusiast Dave, while a Hero kicked butt in a glorious fantasy land around him, the spirit of the series seems alive and well in this reboot.
Now, we have a second trailer and a release window, curtesy of the XBOX Games Showcase 2024. Swapping Dave the vegetable enthusiast for Humphry, Albion’s Greatest* Hero, this trailer showcases plenty of monsters, the ever-present dry wit, and hints of something fearsome to face. Just when we thought we couldn’t be more excited!

When Will Fable Release?
Oh, the hype is getting real now! While it isn’t a firm date to mark in your calendar, the latest trailer has provided us with a release window. 2025.
In an earlier post-Showcase interview with Axios, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty spoke about how expectations of game development need to be shifted from two to three years to five to six with the level of fidelity and higher expectations. And yes, he was talking about Fable as well as other Xbox IPs, like Halo and Gears of War.
Fingers crossed everything stays on track!
