Intel recently announced the latest Thunderbolt standard: Thunderbolt 5.
While it won’t be hitting our shelves for a short while yet, we do know some juicy details on performance, how it differs to USB 4 2.0, and who would benefit from adding this upgrade to their system.
What is Thunderbolt 5?
Thunderbolt 5 is the latest standard of Thunderbolt technology. It is a fast and universal interface that can be used for connecting many types of devices, including such as capture cards, external storage, and gaming monitors. Thunderbolt can be used with a wide range of devices as it combines data, power, audio, and video into one single cable.
Currently, Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 are widely used. We even have a dedicated article comparing the two standards and what they can support within your gaming system.
What can Thunderbolt 5 Do?
Thunderbolt 5 is built on industry standards, such as USB 4 2.0, and designed to deliver 80 gigabits per second (Gbps) of bi-directional bandwidth, which is double the performance of Thunderbolt 4. New to TB5, however, is Bandwidth Boost, which will provide up to 120Gbps and best suited for video. If you’re following the numbers, that’s three times the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4.
TB5 offers twice the PCI Express data throughput than TB4 provided. This means you can enjoy faster storage and external graphics. There is also double the bandwidth for Thunderbolt Networking, allowing for high-speed connections between PCs. What’s more, you can connect an 8K monitor up to 540Hz or two 6K displays, thanks to support for DisplayPort 2.1, perfect for gamers and content creators, alike. Plus, Thunderbolt 5 is capable of power delivery between 140W and 240W.
What is Thunderbolt 5 Good For?
With its support for 8K monitors, high-speed data transfer, and all-around spiciness, Thunderbolt 5 is going to be a game changer for creatives, professionals, and even gamers. If you are after high-resolution displays with low-latency visuals all while working with large files, then Thunderbolt 5 is going to be for you! This standard will provide immersive, high-quality experiences for years to come.
When Can We Expect Thunderbolt 5?
The first Thunderbolt 5 devices are expected to hit our shelves in 2024. It’s unfortunate that they won’t quite make it under 2023’s Christmas tree, but it’s still delightfully soon!
