Tips and Tricks for Quest Users

Whether you’ve just got a brand-new Quest 2 VR headset for Christmas or you’re a returning user looking for the latest tips and tricks, we’ve got them all.

Quest 2 – Meta

The Quest 2 has gone from success to success over the last year, with millions of new users and even more fantastic AAA games launching on the platform. What’s more, with every software update, we get increasingly exciting new features, so whether you’re into wireless PCVR through Airlink or jamming out to some Beat Saber, we’ve got you covered.

Believe in your Guardian

The Guardian comes in two forms. A stationary mode for both standing and sitting, and a boundary box you draw yourself to play in. While it might seem easy to set it and forget it, you’ll soon regret it when you slam your hand into a wall… Yes, I may have done that, but this is more of a do as I say, not as I do situation. The Meta Quest Guardian can be your friend and saving grace, especially when just starting out or returning to VR. However, after a while, this feature can seem to become more of a hindrance as you accidentally set off the proximity warning. The best solution to this is to adjust the boundary sensitivity in the settings, which will allow you to get closer to the edge before triggering the boundary to appear.

Whilst you’re in the settings, make sure to enable Double Tap for Passthrough. This feature uses the tracking cameras on the headset to provide a black and white view of your room. It takes a little while to get used to, but this feature can be a lifesaver when you’ve gotten all turned around fighting some zombies and don’t know where you are in your room.

Embrace a Wire-Free Life – PCVR

Undoubtedly the best feature of the Quest 2 is being able to enjoy VR without the need for a powerful PC to run everything. On the other hand, some genuinely extraordinary PCVR games and experiences have been released over the last couple of years, including fan favourite Half-Life Alyx. So why not enjoy the best of both worlds with Wireless PCVR.

In my mind, one of the best features of the Meta Quest 2 VR headset is Airlink. With it, you can stream PCVR games wirelessly to your headset, and the best part? You don’t need a fast internet connection, just a fast connection from your Quest and PC to your Network Router. Airlink works best on the 5Ghz network band and when your PC is connected to your router via an ethernet cable. If you want the best possible performance, make sure to check out a Wi-Fi 6 router such as the:

TP-Link Archer AX50 Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 Dual-Band Router

The Archer AX50 from TP-Link offers Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) connectivity, and with that comes a huge boost in speed and total network capacity. Additionally, with four gigabit LAN ports and a great user interface for setup, the AX50 is ideal for use as an additional access point for your gamer space.

  • Wi-Fi 6
  • Speeds up to 3000mbps
  • Ultra-Low Latency
  • Reliable Connections

Upgrades people! Upgrades!

So, you’ve fallen hopelessly in love with VR? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! If you have found yourself playing until the battery dies or the headband is digging into your skin, then it is time for accessories. The Quest 2 Elite Strap is the perfect tool to get the most out of your VR experience. The premium hard strap not only enhances stability but alleviates some of the pressure from the front of your face, allowing for longer playtime.

Water, Wasser, Agua, H2O & Moderation

Using the Quest 2 is a hell of a workout, more than you might imagine. If you trawl the forums, you’ll see plenty of users saying they have a dry mouth after using VR. A great feature of VR is you can very easily forget just how much you’re doing, especially in Beat Saber and dancing games. (It’s okay to admit we all secretly love those dancing games.) Keeping a glass of water or a sealed water bottle, if you’re especially accident-prone, nearby but well outside your play area is definitely advised.

Make sure to take regular breaks! When starting out in VR, it can be incredibly overwhelming as your brain tries to figure out what’s going on. Taking on games with lots of action, such as Half-Life Alyx, for long periods of time can leave you feeling disorientated if not sick.

Easing yourself into VR with short sessions to build up a sort of tolerance is the best practice if you want to avoid a wobbly. This is just as true for returning Quest 2 users. If you’ve had a break from playing for even a couple of weeks, make sure to ease back into dancing, fighting, and casting spells.

All the Hertz

The then Oculus Quest 2 (now Meta Quest 2… Yes, it is confusing) launched with just a 72Hz refresh rate. When software version V28 came out earlier this year, we were blessed with up to 120Hz in some games showing just how powerful this headset is. A higher refresh rate can significantly reduce motion sickness for users that suffer from it. Whilst not all games support this feature just yet, a growing number such as SUPERHOT VR, Echo VR, and Population One do.

Enabling the feature is pretty simple as well. First, check your Quest 2 is updated to at least software version V28. Next, you’ll need to connect the device to your PC and enable experimental features in the Oculus desktop app. Finally, on your Quest 2 headset, navigate to experimental features in the settings menu, from here, you can enable and disable any features you wish to use.

Protect those lenses from direct sunlight

Yes, I know we gamers don’t see much of it anyway, but direct sunlight can do serious damage to your Quest 2’s lenses over prolonged periods. The best way to keep your VR headset safe is to keep it in a protective pouch when not in use and whilst transporting.

  • Official Quest 2 Carrying Case
  • Lightweight Protection
  • Fits Quest 2, Controllers, charging cable and Elite Strap

Not only will the official Meta Quest 2 carrying case keep your VR headset safe from direct sunlight, but the easy-carrying handle offers comfortable portability whether you’re at home or travelling. Whilst we’re protecting those lenses, one final tip is to keep them clean! It may seem simple, but after a long battle with zombies or jamming out in Beat Saber, they’ll steam up. Keep a microfiber cloth nearby, and you’re good to go.

Ready to enter the Metaverse?

The Quest 2 is, without a doubt, currently the best entry point into VR. With plenty of standalone AAA games and experiences to enjoy, such as Clash of Chefs, we’re spoiled for choice in what to do first. However, if you’re ready to take on some PCVR masterpieces such as Half-Life Alyx, make sure to check out our VR ready PCs
