While browsing for your next monitor mount upgrade, you’ll have certainly heard the word VESA. But what are VESA monitor mounts and is it even that important?
In this blog post, we’re taking a deep dive into VESA monitor mounts, covering what they are, the different VESA standards, and how to find the right mount for your display.

What is a VESA Monitor Mount?
A VESA mount is a standard for attaching flat panel displays, such as monitors or TVs, to a wall, desk, or other surfaces. To successfully mount your display, you’ll need to ensure that both your screen and mount are equipped with the same VESA standard, typically featuring at least four threads.

What are the Different VESA Standards?
The VESA standards are split into different classifications called MIS (Mounting Interface Standard). This classification makes it easier to differentiate between the various diagonal screen sizes and maximum weight.
The most common VESA standards are:
- VESA MIS-D
- VESA MIS-E
- VESA MIS-F
VESA MIS-D | VESA MIS-E | VESA MIS-F | |
---|---|---|---|
Hole Pattern | 75 x 75 100×100 (75/100) | 200 x 100 200×200 | Hole pattern with steps of 200mm (600×400,800×600 etc) |
Maximum weight | 14kg | 22.7kg | 113.6kg |
Screw size | M4 x 10mm | M4 x 10mm | M6 x 8mm or 10mm or M8 x 15mm |
Screen diagonal | 30.5 bis 58.3cm | 58.4 bis 78.6cm | 78.7 bis 228.6cm |
When selecting a VESA mount, the hole pattern and monitor weight are the primary criteria for determining compatibility. Screen size is only a factor if the surrounding space constrains installation.
How Can I Find Out Which VESA Standard My Monitor Has?
Almost all popular manufacturers will include the corresponding threaded holes to attach a mount. You can see if your monitor is VESA compatible by:
- Checking the back of your monitor. The VESA mounting is in the middle of the backside, typically the base column of the screen is fixed at the VESA mounting. You’ll need to measure the distance between the horizontal and vertical screw holes (centre to centre) to find your VESA standard. For example, if the distance is 400mm x 200mm, your display complies with the VESA MIS-F standard.
- Check the product manual or data sheet. If you still have the product manual for your display, you’ll be able to find all the VESA information in there. You may also be able to search for your display on the manufacturer website by imputing the model number.

How to Find the Right VESA Monitor Mount for Your Display
Don’t know how to find the right mount for your display? We’ve broken it down step-by-step below.
Consider the Size and Weight of Your Screen
The size and weight of your screen is vital as you’ll need to make sure your mount is compatible. Too heavy and you run the risk of your screen falling off the mount or the mount breaking. Too big and the mounting screws won’t line up with your display.
Do You Know Which VESA Standard Your Screen Has?
The VESA standard your screen has is equally important as your mount will have to support the same standard in order for it to be compatible.
If you don’t know what VESA standard your screen has, we covered the key details above so be sure to go back and read them again.

Where are You Trying to Fix the Bracket?
Before you mount your display, we recommend you also check where you’re going to be installing your screen.
If you’re using a desk mount, will your desk support the extra weight? Do you have enough room for the mount? Will you be using a desk clamp to attach your display?
Similarly, if you’re mounting your screen to the wall, is the wall strong enough? Thin materials such as plasterboard typically won’t be able to handle the extra weight of the mount and your display. Are you going to be using screws or would you prefer a mount that doesn’t require drilling?
All these questions need answers before you can select your VESA monitor mount.
