Photorealistic Horror With Unreal Engine 5

Horror games! Oh, Hades, why did it have to be horror games? We’re breaking down everything you need to know about photorealistic horror games in Unreal Engine 5.

I’ll preface this by saying I cannot stand horror… like at all! Why would I want to be scared while I game and then jump at every noise while trying to sleep? No sir, not I! But for you, dear reader, I looked, I screamed, and I cried at every terrifying detail of Unreal Engine 5’s uncanny ability to destroy your soul with photorealistic horror games.

Can’t I just play Stardew Valley Instead?

So, here are the deets: A short video showing Unreal Engine 5 is making the rounds online and… it do be spooky. The video shows what looks to be someone filming at a train station in Toyama, Japan. Before long, the sunny daytime pretty train platform we have all been enjoying turns into something straight out of one of my nightmares. This is no video. It is, in fact, a photorealistic high FPS environment made in Unreal Engine 5.

Created by YouTube user subjectn, the scene is running in Unreal Engine 5 with all of the modelling, texturing, lighting, and animation solely created by them. If this is what one person can put together inside this new engine, then we might not survive next-generation horror games.

What hardware do you need for Unreal Engine 5?

If you’re the sort of monster that intends to work on terrifying photorealistic games in Unreal Engine 5, then please don’t you’ll need to know what it takes to run it. The base system requirements to run the engine are relatively low:

Operating SystemWindows 10 64-bit version 1909 revision .1350 or higher, or versions 2004 and 20H2 revision .789 or higher.
CPUQuad-core Intel or AMD, 2.5 GHz or faster
RAM8 GB RAM
GPUDirectX 11 or 12 compatible graphics card
RHI VersionDirectX 11: Latest drivers
DirectX 12: Latest drivers
Vulkan: AMD (21.11.3+) and NVIDIA (496.76+)

However, we recommend a significantly more powerful PC if you intend to work on any graphically demanding games or scenes involving photorealism. For example, a powerful GPU such as an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 or AMD Radeon RX 6800 alongside a similarly powerful CPU, such as Intel’s 12th Gen i7 or AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X. Finally, at least 16GB, but preferably 32GB of RAM would be ideal.
