What is Melobot – A Last Song?
Developed by Anaomalie Studio, Melobot – A Last Song is a wholesome rhythm game where you play as a little Melobot with a tuba-like musical instrument on his back. The world around you is in danger from corrupting dark matter, and it’s up to you to sing the Meloplants, the local flora, back to health. Each species of Meloplant sings its own song, and you must master each tune to bring nature back into balance. But there are mechanical foes out there, trying to undo your good work.
Melobot – A Last Song Gameplay
Melobot – A Last Song is a beautiful world just waiting to be explored. The first area of the game serves as a tutorial, with the scientist who made you guiding you through everything that needs to be done. While certain areas are obstructed until you reach certain milestones, you are free to explore the land how you please. Your overall goal is to heal the land, freeing the Melopants from dark matter and defeating the guardian robots that were left behind. Along the way, there is data to collect that will piece together just what happened to the scientists that used to be here.
As you venture through new areas and to different biomes, you gain experience points which can be spent on your skill tree. This develops your abilities, reducing the time it takes to use them or increasing the damage they do. What’s more, you’ll unlock new musical instruments as you reach new biomes, so the beat stays fresh!
Our Thoughts
Overall, Melobot – A Last Song is a very quick and simple game to pick up. You walk around, find a plant, it sings at you, and you have to try play back to it, following the notes and the rhythm. The better you do, the higher you score. The musical puzzles provide enough of a challenge to not be too easy, but don’t venture into the realm of frustrating either. As someone who plays piano, I found that some of the more challenging melodies tapped into that skill set – figuring out which fingers were needed for which note. At times, two hands were required!
This game strikes a wonderful balance between mellow gameplay, visually rich sci-fi settings, world building curiosity, and the competitive drive to perfection each level. All Meloplants must be healed with a Virtuoso score and every scrap of data must be analysed!
World building is one of my favourite things about exploring new media – I could quite happily sit and get lost in all the detail. Finding a data spot to analyse not only breaks up the melodic gameplay, but provides a perfect snapshot of the planet from before. From fallen statues to collapsing buildings, there is plenty to discover.
Combining the artistry (and themes!) of Studio Ghibli with Pixar vibes, Melobot – A Last Song is perfect for vibing to a beautifully orchestrated soundscape and living your best Wall-E life.
