Ye Olde Casual Gaming: Medieval Delivery Hits the Sweet Spot

Developed by Mega Game Studios, this is a third-person, delivery simulation game. These new kids on the block were only established in 2022 and are off to a great start! Medieval Delivery was released for early access on September 9th and has, at the time of writing, received only positive reviews! We got the chance to play this casual delivery game, and here are our thoughts.

Medieval Delivery Gameplay

Medieval Delivery is exactly what it says on the tin. Set in the idyllic town of Thornridge, the locale features distinctly medieval architecture, ye olde fashion, and technology fitting with the time. As in, a lack thereof. Right from the get-go, you are immersed into strong historical vibes, from the environment to the soundscape. Each area of town plays a different theme, but they are very in-keeping with the aesthetic as well individually pleasant to listen to.

Gameplay, itself, is simplistic. You find the person with a quest, accept it, and run your delivery. It is not samey, however, as there are a variety of missions to take on. From basic delivery to recovering items, each job presents its own challenges and ways to fail. This could include not reaching a drop-off point within a time limit (complete with intense music) or even having your goods damaged by the roaming chickens. Guess how I failed my first mission.

What’s more, with a sprawling map filled with people and obstacles, Medieval Delivery is more than charging in a straight line towards the final destination. There are buildings to navigate, walls to jump, and bridges to find. You can’t deliver soggy goods, now, can you? Any time you do collide with an obstacle, be it fence, object, or person, you come to a dead stop – so it’s very important to watch out for your surroundings!

The World of Thornridge

You play as Alistair, a local gent known for his delivering skill. As a small town, everyone seems to know the other residents. Each job you take on, you get to learn just a little bit more of this rich tapestry of people. But there are darker themes at play too, with talk of bandits, hidden pasts, and black markets to add a layer of intrigue to this humble story.

The town, itself, plays home to a cast of professions you’d expect in a medieval town. Visit the carpenter, blacksmith, and even an alchemist – because all games need a touch of magic. Between deliveries, you can kick back in your own home, a sparse cottage that you can decorate to make feel welcoming. Within your home, you have the ability to change the time of day, as certain jobs and items are limited to a time of day. For example, return to the carpenter in the morning or find a specific mushroom at night. This handy mechanic allows you to skip to the time you need and continue your delivery without delay.

Our Thoughts

Medieval Delivery is chill and a great game to play if you’re tired after a long day. It doesn’t take much thinking, which is always a good thing when you just need to unwind, and the ready stream of quests to accept makes gameplay moreish. Oh, just one more quest! Plus, no two deliveries are the same, so the map always feels fresh yet familiar as you learn more about Thornridge. Also, the scenery is absolutely beautiful and gloriously detailed. I was very happy just wandering the map and taking in the views.

As this game is in early access, a couple bugs are to be expected. The fact they occurred after I failed a mission certainly made it feel like they wouldn’t have happened if only I was better at gaming! Still, this aside, I can see the game Medieval Delivery is going to grow into and the niche it fills. Fulfilling delivery after delivery almost took on a meditative quality after a while, and the ambient music certainly helped. (Except on the timed deliveries – that track is intense, man!)

The controls were easy to master and new mechanics were seamlessly introduced, as and when they were needed. There certainly wasn’t an info dump at the beginning to be promptly forgotten. Gameplay and development feels organic and stays very much on brand with the relaxing tone, even as you’re learning new facets of the game.

Medieval Delivery will scratch the itch for lowkey gameplay. It won’t consume your every gaming session, but when you need to switch off from the world, it will be waiting.
