A cultural phenomenon, game of the century, and holder of childhood nostalgia, Minecraft has been around in one form or another since 2009! But did you know you can actually play Minecraft in VR? In this article we’ve got all the deets on how to do just that.
How To Play Minecraft In VR
Before we jump right in, Minecraft only officially supports virtual reality in Bedrock Edition. This means versions purchased from the Microsoft Store have built-in VR support.
Here’s how to get started, whether you’re using a HTC VIVE, META QUEST, or another VR headset:
Step One – Connect your VR headset to your PC. You can do so through a tether cable, Airlink, or other wireless VR applications.
Step Two – If detected automatically, Minecraft should appear in your games library on your VR headset. Don’t worry if the game fails to show up, as you may have to set up Minecraft VR manually which we’ll show you how to do below 👀
Yes. You Can Play Cyberpunk 2077 in VR!
Minecraft VR Is Not In My Games Library
Don’t panic! VR is still a tricky beast sometimes, but there is a super simple way to force Minecraft to launch in VR from your desktop. If the game has failed to appear in your headset’s game library automatically, there are some options you can try. If you’re using SteamVR, you can add Minecraft Bedrock Edition to Steam as a non-Steam game and launch it from within SteamVR.
Option One – To add a non-steam game, simply navigate to the bottom left of your Steam library and click “Add a Game”. You’ll then be prompted to locate the .exe file for the game. Now you should be able to launch Minecraft from within Steam and SteamVR.
Option Two – You can also create a Shortcut on your desktop to launch Minecraft Bedrock Edition in VR.
Step One – Right-click on your desktop and select ‘New’ > ‘Shortcut’.
Step Two – In the location field, enter: minecraft://Mode/?OpenXR=true.
Step Three – Click ‘Next’ and name your shortcut (e.g., “Minecraft VR”).
Step Four – Click ‘Finish’. The shortcut will appear on your desktop with the Minecraft icon.
Using the Shortcut – Ensure your VR headset is connected and powered on. Click the newly created shortcut to launch Minecraft: Bedrock Edition in VR.
