Killer Frequency is an incredible first-person VR and non-VR horror set in the middle of a washed-up radio DJ’s late-night show.
Team17 was kind enough to send over a review copy of Killer Frequency to us at the Overclockers UK Blog, and by Hades, I loved it! My background working in radio broadcasting might make me ever so slightly biased here. Still, Killer Frequency has to have the best premise for a first-person horror comedy adventure ever.

TLDR Review
Looking for a yes or no as to whether you should pick up Killer Frequency on Meta Quest 2? Then the answer is most definitely yes! If you buy one VR game this year, make it Killer Frequency. From the incredible sound design and voice acting all the way to stylised graphics, Team17 has created the single best VR game I’ve played so far this year.
We’re now in the midnight hour, and you’re listening to 189.16, The Scream
I’ve talked previously about how sound design can make or break a game for me in the first few moments, and Killer Frequency hits this nail squarely on the head. Take a look at the very start of the game, for example. Within the VR control introduction, the eerie alleyway is just that. We hear a bottle rolling across in front of us and a cough from somewhere behind or maybe on the rooftops. I won’t spoil the ending of this tutorial scene, but let me tell you, when the light suddenly flickers off, I was near enough closing my eyes. It really is the little things that make Killer Frequency great. Even bumping into the radio desk’s microphone will make the correct sound.
Don’t Sleep on Shadows of Doubt!
Continuing to focus on sound design for a moment, flicking through records to choose the right one is made super fun by an awesome 80s-inspired soundtrack. You start out the night by going through a sound check with our producer Peggy, who’ll take you through using the radio desk, including choosing records. We start off with eight records to choose from, with more to unlock as we progress through the story.
Gameplay
As Gallows Creek’s only late-night phone-in talk show and with a ‘missing’ police department, Forrest Nash, our washed-up late-night radio disk jockey, is the only hope for our callers.
Killer Frequency requires us to make real-time decisions solving puzzles to help our callers survive. Like using a manual to help a potential victim gain entry into a car without the key. You’ll need to gather clues, make quick decisions, and solve riddles if the people of Gallows Creek stand any hope of survival. These calls are so immersive as you scramble to help, I genuinely thought the callers were in real danger. With Killer Frequency, Team17 has managed to create a genre-defining comedy horror in VR.
Helped along by some brilliant comedy horror writing and incredible performances by the cast’s voice actors, Killer Frequency is chock-a-block with interesting characters and storylines. Every phone call I took as Gallows Creek’s temporary 911 operator had the story never missing a beat. Team17, whatever you’re paying your team, it isn’t enough!
From the very first phone call with police dispatcher Leslie Harper, we’re thrown into the deep end, setting the stage for the rest of the game. It looks like the Whistling Man, a yet unknown to Forrest infamous killer from Gallows Creek’s past… is back
When you’re not saving callers and exploring the station, you can kick back and throw paper balls into the bin’s basketball hoop or just relax with some great music. I’m not in the business of spoilers, so you’ll have to grab Killer Frequency if you want to know more.
What Platforms Can I Play Killer Frequency on?
Fear not, non-VR fans! Killer Frequency launches TODAY on a boatload of consoles and PC in addition to the incredible made-for-Quest version of the game.
Specifically designed for the Meta Quest 2, Killer Frequency runs natively on the headset at 72 FPS, providing a latency-free experience.
What’s more, Team17 have pushed the boat out for native Quest 2 graphics. The game not only plays great but looks incredible on the headset… Certain other titles, which I won’t name here, please take note.
