If your new graphics card has more 6pin PCIe connector requirements than your own power supply has connections to offer, then an appropriate adapter is required in order to still achieve the required number of PCIe connectors.

The most common which is often included with the graphics cards which is two Molex plugs to PCIe. However, there are other possibilities. In this variant, the power for the graphics card comes from a pair of SATA connectors that usually power SATA drives. Two 15-Pin SATA are converted to a 6pin PCIe. Particularly useful when no more connections are free.
