What’s in a Water Cooling Kit?
Water cooling kits are designed to provide you with everything you need to build a custom cooling loop and maintain your gaming hardware at optimum temperatures. We’ve listed the common components you can expect to find:
- Water Block - The water block facilitates heat transfer between your processor and coolant. Typically, they feature a large copper cooling plate with a microfin stack milled into its surface. This is enclosed in a protective housing that features a flow guide for your coolant. Two ports are cut into the housing, allowing for fittings to be installed, which can be attached to your tubing.
- Radiator - The radiator expels heat from your coolant. A radiator features multiple copper tubes interconnected by hundreds of small fins, contained in a protective frame. Air is pushed or pulled through these fins by one or more fans, dissipating the excess heat.
- Pump - A pump is used to place your coolant under pressure, forcing it to flow through the loop and direct heat away from the water block to the radiator. There are two popular types of water pump, the D5, which delivers excellent flow rates, or the DDC, which boasts higher pressure performance.
- Reservoir - With a reservoir installed in your loop, your pump will have consistent access to coolant. This ensures it never runs dry, preventing damage to the pump. Additionally, they provide an easy-to-access location for bleeding air out of your loop and for topping up liquid coolant.
- Fittings and Tubing - To connect the core components of your loop, you’ll need a series of fittings and tubing. Fittings consist of a base and locking ring. These two pieces sandwich together and lock a piece of tubing in place when screwed. Tubing is used to move coolant from one component to the next and is available in either soft or hardline options.
