Processor Water Blocks
Keep your CPU at optimum temperatures with a Processor Water Block from brands such as Phanteks, Thermal Grizzly, Alphacool, and XSPC. These Processor Water Blocks are designed to efficiently transfer heat away from your CPU, allowing it to deliver exceptional performance for longer. Many CPU blocks are designed to work with processors from both Intel and AMD, however, some are optimised for specific CPU models. Typically, a processor water block is installed using existing mounting points and hardware, although you can also find models that mount directly to the die of your CPU. Plus, processor water blocks are a stylish addition to your PC, available in a range of finishes with features such as RGB lighting or LED screens.
What's in the Block?
Processor water blocks typically feature the same set of components, no matter which brand has manufactured them. These include:
- Cold Plate - A cold plate is the part of the water block that makes contact with your CPU. Most cold plates are manufactured from copper, due to its outstanding thermal conductivity that allows heat to easily pass between your processor and your coolant.
- Fin Array - There are multiple micro-fins milled into the inner surface of the cold plate. These small fins significantly increase the surface area of the cold plate, allowing for more effective heat transfer to your coolant.
- Housing - The housing features a flow guide cut into it, which dictates how your coolant will move through the block. The housing is typically constructed from acrylic or brass, but other materials can be used.
- Ports - The block will feature two ports for coolant to enter and exit. These are usually found cut into the top of the housing, but some models may include them on the sides. They are usually keyed for a specific fitting diameter, so check beforehand that your hardware is compatible.
- Seals - To ensure that your water block doesn’t leak, they’ll be sealed with one or more O-rings. Typically made of rubber, these sit between the cold plate and housing, preventing any liquid from escaping.

How do you mount a processor water block?
Most processor water blocks are simple to install, using similar mounting hardware as AIO and air coolers. Simply attach the matching bracket that corresponds to your CPU and screw the block to the mounting plate behind your motherboard. Some high-performance blocks may use direct die cooling, which will require additional steps to install. Should I air- or water-cool my processor?
Whether you choose to air- or water-cool your processor depends on what CPU you have. An energy efficient model, such as an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3, would not benefit from water cooling. Meanwhile, an Intel Core i9 or AMD Ryzen 9 is better suited to water cooling.
How often should I clean my processor water block?
Checking your processor and custom loop for issues should be performed on a regular basis. Also, you should try to perform a deep clean of your system every six to twelve months.
