An M.2 drive, for example, is generally a small PCB slightly larger than a stick of gum with no protective case, as they directly interface with your motherboard. A 2.5" SSD however is housed in a protective casing, which can be easily mounted to a PC case. Finally, an external SSD utilises a robust stand-alone case to store the drive, as it is intended to protect it from knocks and bumps whilst in transit.
