Monitors by Resolution
Here at Overclockers UK we stock a wide variety of monitors fit for any job from 1080p to 8K. One of the most important aspects of choosing a display that is right for you is knowing what resolution you need. A 1080p monitor will be an ideal for the budding online gaming pro with fantastic refresh rates and response times. A 4K display will offer you the chance to watch your favourite streaming shows the way they’re meant to be seen with crisp details and exceptional colour reproduction.
Which monitor resolution is best?
The best resolution for you depends on what you’re planning on using your display for. A 1080p monitor with a high refresh rate and lightning-quick response time will be great if you’re playing a high-octane online game but won’t be as good for creative work. A 4K or 8K display with amazing HDR capabilities will be spectacular for editing your latest project, but will probably not be responsive enough for competitive online matches.
What monitor resolutions are available?
- 1080p – 1080p otherwise known as Full High Definition (FHD) features a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It is the minimum standard that enthusiasts have come to expect from modern displays. The pros for using one of these monitors is that they are perfect for gaming with older hardware as you don’t need a powerful GPU to produce excellent results. Furthermore, they excel at high framerate reproduction with many models boasting 144+ FPS. The cons are that these displays physically cannot reproduce as crisp images as found on higher resolutions.
- 1440p – 1440p otherwise known as Quad High Definition (QHD) features a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. It is quickly becoming the standard that enthusiasts seek to play their favourite titles on. The pros for one of these displays is that they offer sharper images when compared to a 1080p display, and individual pixels are less noticeable on larger screens. A con to take into consideration if upgrading to one of these monitors is that you'll need a more powerful GPU, which may require a full upgrade of your PC.
- 4K – 4K otherwise known as Ultra High Definition (UHD) features a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This is the resolution that has become the de-facto standard for home media, with many TVs taking full advantage it. Some of the pros of using one of these displays is their exceptional image quality and colour reproduction, alongside the sheer amount of screen real estate on offer perfect for multitasking. Some cons with 4K are that it’s a very power-hungry resolution needing a powerful GPU to output the 4K signal, as well as the fact that native 4K media is still somewhat limited.
- 8K – 8K resolution features four times the pixel density of 4K, measuring 7680 x 4320 pixels. This is the latest standard to have been commercially released, with manufacturers slowly rolling out displays that utilise it. The biggest pro for 8K displays is the unrivalled picture quality that can be achieved thanks to enhanced sharpness from all those extra pixels. The cons are that you’ll need special hardware to be able to get a signal to power these displays, you’ll require a GPU and cable that support either HDMI 2.1 or DP 1.4.
