WD (Western Digital) is well known for producing reliable, high-performance storage solutions. Their range of products is aimed at providing ultra-high-capacity storage, utilising traditional spinning platter hard drive technology. A WD drive boasts storage sizes from as little as 1TB to double-digit figures! What’s more, they produce a wide variety of drives to suit any requirements, from WD Red for NAS systems to WD Gold optimised for enterprise use and WD Blue aimed at gamers.
Next Step for WD and SanDisk
Starting in February 2025 and finalising in January 2026, Western Digital made the decision to separate its hard drive and solid-state storage drive businesses into two independent entities. WD now focuses on HDD products, while the SSD side has been spun off under the SanDisk banner.
What This Means for You?
Although the brands may change, you’ll still be able to find the same incredible hardware. However, the brand you’re searching for could be different. If you’re after a high-capacity HDD, then WD is who you’ll need to search for. Alternatively, if you want a superfast SSD, you’ll need to explore options from SanDisk instead. As such, some of the products you may have searched for in the past will have changed. For example, the WD Black and Blue SSD ranges now come under the SanDisk Optimus line. - WD_BLACK SN8xxx Series is now the SanDisk Optimus GX PRO Series
- WD_BLACK SN7xxx Series is now the SanDisk Optimus GX Series
- WD Blue SN5xxx Series is now the SanDisk Optimus Series
Will Warranties be Honoured?
Any SSD purchased under the WD brand will still retain its original warranty. However, this will now be honoured by SanDisk in place of WD under the same terms as laid out at the time of purchase.
