Level up your gaming PC with a 16GB RAM kit from Overclockers UK. Whether you’re wanting to work or game, a 16GB RAM memory solution is an easy upgrade that can drastically improve the performance of your gaming PC. We stock a variety of 16GB RAM kits, from manufacturers including Team Group, Corsair, Kingston, and Crucial. These come in either DDR4 and DDR5 standards, in a range of speeds, latencies, and form factors. This includes both full height and low-profile DIMM modules, as well as SODIMM memory kits designed for laptops. What’s more, 16GB RAM solutions are available in multiple configurations, including single-channel 16GB modules, dual-channel 8GB models, and quad-channel 4GB kits.
Column Address Strobe (CAS) latency is the delay between your CPU sending a request to your RAM and the time that the data is available to use. This delay is measured in the number of clock cycles between request and release. The lower the number of cycles needed, the better the performance.
CAS is one of the main ways to differentiate between RAM models, along with their size and speed. Two kits can have similar capacities and speeds but have different CAS latencies. For example, a 16GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM kit with a CAS latency (CL) of 16 requires sixteen cycles to complete its tasks, which is quicker than a 16GB DDR4 3200MHz kit with a CL of 20, which takes twenty cycles.
Newer generations of RAM come with increases in speed. DDR4 is commonly rated between 3000MHz and 4000MHz, whereas DDR5 can see upwards of 6000MHz. Boosting the speed of your memory also increases its CAS latency. An example of this is that DDR4 features CLs in the teens, which rises to the 30-40s with DDR5. However, this generally does not affect the real-world latency of your RAM, which is calculated by multiplying the speed of a clock cycle by the number of clocks required to complete a task. As such, the true latencies between generations have generally stayed the same.
Is 8GB of RAM still the gold standard? Does it matter if you have DDR4 or DDR5 memory? What about its speed? To help you answer these questions and more, we have an in depth look at all you need to know about RAM on the Overclockers UK blog.
Read MoreThe amount of RAM you’ll need depends on what you wish to use your computer for. If you are planning on light work usage, then 8GB is probably more than plenty. For gaming, at least 16GB is recommended. Meanwhile, for creative work such as video editing, you may wish to consider 32GB and up.
A dual-channel configuration for your memory is the superior choice. This is because it allows for your CPU to access twice the amount of RAM, for a marked increase in performance.
Both how much RAM and the configuration you use can impact your computer’s performance and, thus, your gaming. If your computer lacks sufficient RAM, or you only utilise a single-channel configuration, you can limit the performance of your CPU and impact your gaming in several ways. This includes how quickly your CPU can process inputs, from your keyboard and mouse to how well the AI of an NPC can function.
Here at Overclockers UK you can find RAM kits from manufacturers including Team Group, Corsair, Lexar, Kingston, Crucial, and Gigabyte.
The speed of RAM depends on its generation. For example, the first generation of DDR RAM could operate at a maximum speed of 400MHz, meanwhile DDR5 can currently reach speeds of up to 6400MHz.
