Maintain peak performance for your gaming PC, with Overclockers UK’s range of highly efficient thermal pastes, from manufacturers including Thermal Grizzly, Artic, Prolimatech, and Noctua. To keep your gaming PC cool and quiet, you need to be able to dispose of the heat produced by your components. Thermal solutions, such as air and water coolers, are utilised to achieve this. If you try to connect one of these directly to your CPU, your processor will quickly overheat, as the contact plate of your cooler and the processor have a small air gap between them. Air is a phenomenal insulator, preventing heat from being transferred from one component to the other. To fill this gap, you’ll need to use a thermal paste that boasts a very low thermal impedance and allows for effective heat transfer to occur. Thermal pastes come in a variety of materials, such as ceramics, silver, and aluminium suspended in a highly malleable grease, or even liquid metal thermal compounds.
To transfer heat away from your core components, you need minimal impedance between them and their cooling solution. Air, for example, is a poor choice as it boasts an impedance of 0.024W/mK. Thus, any component with air between it and its cooler will quickly overheat.
This is why we utilise thermal pastes and compounds for increased conductivity. Many of these pastes utilise microscopic particles of metals which are excellent for transferring heat. Typically, these compounds offer between 5-15W/mK of thermal conductivity. Thanks to this, any excess heat is effectively dissipated away from vital components, allowing them to operate at peak performance.
For the pinnacle of heat transfer, you can opt to use liquid metal thermal compounds. Many liquid metal compounds utilise a trio of metals, gallium, indium, and tin. This combination can offer phenomenal thermal conductivity, with many ranging from 60-80W/mK. This allows for extremely efficient heat transfer to occur, meaning even the hottest of components can be maintained at optimum temperatures.
Thermal paste is an essential component for ensuring good contact between your CPU and cooler, helping to prevent overheating. But what is the best method to apply thermal paste? We’ve got you covered, with a dedicated application guide on the Overclockers UK Blog.
Read MoreThere are many ways to apply thermal paste, with people often having their own preferred method. One of the most popular ways is to place a pea sized amount at the centre of your CPU and allow the pressure mounting force of your cooler to spread the paste to where it’s needed. An alternative option is to pre-spread the thermal paste; as this ensures an even distribution of paste across the whole of your CPU.
Your thermal paste will only need replacing once every couple of years to prevent drying out. That said, if you ever remove your cooler, you should always replace the thermal paste application.
Whether a thermal paste can damage your motherboard depends on the materials used. If your paste is electrically conductive, then there is a chance that if it gets onto your motherboard then it can short out your motherboard. For example, a liquid metal compound runs this risk.
