Flash Memory
Explore a wide range of flash memory solutions, including USB flash drives, SD, and microSD memory cards. We stock fantastic flash memory devices from both Lexar and Kingston, available in capacities from 64GB to 256GB. Flash memory operates in a similar capacity to your computer’s RAM, with both utilising semi-conductor technology to store data. However, unlike RAM which needs constant power delivery to retain data, flash memory is non-volatile, meaning that the data will remain intact even when unpowered. You can quickly copy data to and from a flash memory device thanks to super-fast transfer speeds around 100-200MB/s. Flash memory devices are highly portable, as they are small and lightweight. What’s more, they are compatible with a wide range of devices, including PCs, laptops, cameras, tablets, and phones.
What is Flash Memory
Flash memory is type of non-volatile electronic storage, meaning data is retained even when the device is unpowered. The most common type of flash memory is NAND flash, which is included in most consumer grade electronics. This type of storage can be utilised across a range of devices, some of which are listed below:
- USB stick: Also known as thumb drives and flash drives, the USB stick is a highly portable version of flash memory. One or more flash memory modules are mounted onto a PCB and connected to a USB interface, which is then encased in a protective shell. Most modern USB sticks offer capacities of 64GB or more, making them ideal for quickly transporting files between devices.
- SD Cards: An SD card utilises a flash memory module that is directly connected to an interface. They are available in standard size and a smaller form factor, called MicroSD. Some of the most common SD cards capacities available are 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. SD cards are used with a wide range of electronic devices, such as phones, tablets, cameras, and consoles. The most common use of SD cards is in photography, as their small size and large capacity make them a highly versatile storage medium allowing for hundreds of shots to easily be captured out in the field.
- SSDs: The most common use of flash memory you’ll find is in solid state drives (SSDs) for your PC. An SSD incorporates multiple flash memory modules onto a PCB. They are widely utilised across PCs, consoles, tablets, and phones, and can be found in multiple capacities. Furthermore, SSDs can come in many form factors, including 2.5" and NVMe drives of varying lengths.
