The Vive Cosmosfrom HTC is directed in particular towards gamers that want to discover the immersion that only Virtual Reality can offer. This updated Virtual Reality Headset brings with it increased resolution and revised lenses to offer a clearer view of the virtual world. The Motion Tracking occurs by means of six external cameras, enabling not only precision tracking of your location in space, but also control over the controllers HTC has included. Base stations are no longer necessary either. Two LC-Displays with a resolution of 1440 x 1700 pixels and a high refresh rate of 90 Hz deliver a smooth image to the user, while the integrated headphones supply a superb and realistic soundscape.
The high-resolution LC-Displays helps to make the Vive Cosmos exceptionally sharp and bright, enabling unparalleled immersion into your VR experience of choice. For a smooth picture, and for the prevention of motion sickness, the displays utilise an extremely high refresh rate of 90 Hz with a motion-to-photon latency of below 20ms.
Thanks to the six integrated cameras, the headset is capable of tracking the data received from the user's surroundings and then coordinating then with the bundled controllers - before relaying this to the HMD's screen. The only connection between the headset and the PC occurs via the 5m long All-In-One cable and uses a DisplayPort 1.2 and USB 3.0 Type-C connection.
This method of tracking movement, "Inside-Out-Tracking", allows users to move around a virtual world in a manner not so distant from that of Star Trek's famous holodecks. When players reach the end of their allocated play area, a grid-style barrier appears in VR to inform you. This technology is known as theChaperone System, and it can be adjusted to meet your individual requirements using software settings.
Although the Chaperone System is activated automatically when the player reaches the edge of their playing area, it can also be manually adjusted using the VR Controller. This will then show barriers akin to those in the "Matrix" or in "Tron".
In order to make the VR experience not only a visual experience but also an acoustic experience, as well as making it all as immersive as possible, theVive Cosmos Headset offers integrated headphones with a powerful digital amplifier with High-Res certification. This allows it to process high-grade audio signals with a broader frequency spectrum. The Vive Cosmos also compares favourably to the competition in terms of its microphone quality, with two integrated microphones allowing the headset to provide active noise cancellation, thus minimising unwanted sounds from your environment
You can also communicate with your environment or smartphone via different modes. For example, phone calls can be made or text messages read without having to remove the headset. For maximum comfort, the Vive Cosmos is equipped with a comfortable headset strap that distributes the weight over the entire head. The headset can also be opened and the gamer quickly catapulted back into the real world without having to awkwardly remove it.
In addition, the two enclosed VR controllers can be integrated into the system as an input interface, with the help of which virtual reality interactions take place. Depending on the game or program, these act as brushes, firearms, or to mount the matching fender on the newly designed car. Since the VR controllers are captured by the Inside-Out-Tracking of the headset, the current position of the VR controllers is always displayed while playing, whereby this is usually represented as a predefined object, such as a brush or a pistol.
In order to meet the high frame rate of the two LC displays at 90 Hz, the PC system connected to the Vive Cosmos must be able to output a constant 90 FPS (frames per second) at a resolution of two times 1,440 x 1,700 pixels, which is why HTC recommends the following system requirements:
Display | Type: 2 x LC-Display, 3.4" diagonal Resolution per display: 1440 x 1700 pixels Frame rate: 90 Hz Subpixel: Full RGB matrix |
