Analog Switch Keyboards

Ducky One X with analog switches

Enjoy finer control in your gaming worlds with an analog switch keyboard from Overclockers UK. Explore a fantastic selection of models, with a variety of switches including Hall Effect, Optical, and Inductive, from manufacturers including Razer and Ducky. A traditional mechanical keyboard features a single activation point at a fixed point along the travel of the switch. Meanwhile, analog switches offer a range of advantages over mechanical switches, including customising the switch activation point and enabling keyboards to be tuned to lighter or heavier typing styles. What’s more, once pressure is released, they can be instantly reactivated instead of waiting for the key to return to its highest point. Additionally, different inputs can be mapped to the same key. For example, you can assign both walking and sprinting forward to the W, with each needing a different amount of force to trigger.

Types of Analog Switches

Analog switches come in a variety of models, each offering a variety of advantages and disadvantages. Three types of switches you may find are:

  • Hall Effect A Hall Effect switch operates by moving a permanent magnet closer to a sensor. As the magnet approaches the sensor, the magnetic field increases, which creates more voltage through the circuit. How much voltage generated in the circuit can be used to detect how close the magnet is to the sensor, which can then be used to determine how far the key has been depressed.
  • Optical As their name suggests, an optical switch detects light to determine whether a switch is pressed. Within the switch is a light source and a sensor. There are two different options for optical switches, those that have the light blocked at rest and those that block it when pressed. Whichever method is used, the sensor can detect the change of light to determine how far the key has moved.
  • Inductive Inductive switches are like Hall Effect switches, in that they utilise magnetism. However, an inductive switch includes a coil of wire through which a current is passed, creating an electromagnetic field. As the switch is depressed a piece of metal on the stem of the key passes down through the coil, changing the field as it goes through it. This in turn changes the current of the circuit which, when measured, can be used to determine how deep the key has been pressed.
