Good small GPU

by Rob star star star star star

I chose this one because it would fit inside my Dan small form factor case (which is limited to 2 slot cards, which are hard to come by). It performs well enough at 1080P in games like Total War Warhammer 3 and Path of Exile. Also doesn't get too hot.

Fast and Efficient

by Ciaran star star star star star

There is a lot to be said about this GPU that is very good. My previous GPU was a Vega 64 Nitro+. It was and still is a great GPU. I just wanted something a bit faster that used less energy. I was surprised by how much faster it was over my Vega 64 in a few workoads. Vega 64 undervolt and memory overclock settings for reference: Core Clock: 1580mhz Core Voltage: 956mv Memory Clock: 1075mhz Memory Voltage: 956mv/1.35v For gaming the 6600XT is significantly faster. Comparing my Vega 64's undervolt and memory overclock to the stock 6600XT with SAM (Smart Access Memory) enabled in Forza Horizon 5 at 1440p high preset the 6600XT was 50% faster on average and sometimes up to 90% faster depending on the scene. For reference the Vega 64 would average 86fps while the 6600XT averages 130fps. Moving to something older that uses an old game engine and DirectX 11I had tested a game mod called Stalker Lost Alpha. Comparing the 6600XT to the Vega 64 was another bloodbath at 1440p with both using the same hand tuned config. The 6600XT was yet again 50% faster on average hitting 140-180fps when the Vega 64 would be around 80-120fps. I have my games capped at 180fps for my 180hz freesync panel so for Lost Alpha some of the margins could be a little bit larger from my testing. I tested some transcoding with handbrake using the newer VCN 3.0 encoder/decoder found in the 6600XT. Compared to the old VCE 4.0 encoder found in Vega it's mind blowing the difference in performance. When encoding a 1080p 24fps x265 video from 5000/192kbps to 1750/192kbps the 6600XT was between 80-90% faster while delivering superior image quality over the Vega 64. The 6600XT would avergae 320fps compared to the Vega 64's 190fps using the exxact same preset. I had tested x264 also. But the 6600XT wins by default having far superior quality over the Vega 64 especialy at really low bitrates. The 6600XT Nitro is an mazing card. It is light and pretty compact but does takre up slightly more than 2 slots. It runs pretty cool with a peak hotspot temp of 90 degrees at a fan speed of 900rpm. The card is incredibly quiet. It has a dual BIOS switch. If you leave the BIOS in the middle setting I am sure it sets the card BIOS to be controlled via software from their Trixx software which allows you to switch from either the performance or silent BIOS on the fly. The fans are easily replaced if one ever fails. All it takes is one screw to remove each fan and they have no cables making your life a lot easier. Do I recommend the 6600XT Nitro? Yes, I would recommend it to anyone who wants a significant upgrade over their previous GPU that isn't really fast enough for their needs. If you own something like a GTX 1060/1650 Super, 1070, 1080 or a Radeon RX590 or a Vega 56/64 you will have a great upgrade for the money. But, ask yourself this. Are you happy with the current card you have? Do you need the upgrade or do you simply want it? I was happy with my Vega 64. I replaced it simply because my mum didn't have a GPU and she was sick of waiting around for reasonable prices so I got the 6600XT and gave her the Vega 64. The 6600XT was a great choice. It is not only faster but more efficient. If you drive a 1080p display you do not need a 6600XT if you have something like a Vega 64. If you are learning productivity tasks the 6600XT is a great choice for its performance. I hope this review helps you make a buying decision. Something I couldn't really find online was how good the new VCN 3.0 encoder was and you have a rough idea here now if that is an aspect that matters to you.

An unintentionally good card

by Acrobat star star star star star

The 6600XT was very underwhelming at launch. At an MSRP essentially equivalent to that of the RTX 3060 Ti, it is substantially slower in many titles. However, with this card being easy to find in stock for about 450 pounds, and the RTX 3060 Ti going for more like 900 pounds, the value proposition gets much, much better. The Sapphire Nitro and Pulse cards have an additional feature where resolution scaling can be turned on for any game. This helps them get an extra edge over other 6600XTs. When used in conjunction with AMD's FSR technology in games that support it, the 6600XT produces very smooth, good looking gameplay. I could run Cyberpunk 2077 at the "high" preset (with Motion Blur turned off, of course), at 80% resolution scaling in Sapphire's software, with FSR at "balanced," at over 100 FPS, at 1440p. It's a massive improvement to my old Vega 56, which could manage 40FPS at 1440p medium. Doom Eternal easily hits over 144FPS on the highest preset at 1440P, with no noticeable stutter or slowdown, even in the most hectic arenas in the Ancient Gods pt 1 and the Super Gore Nest master level. The Nitro itself is a very nice card, with a silver asthetic, three BIOSes, and the ability to be controlled by a motherboard's lighting software using a 3-pin 5v RGB header. Even at 100% fanspeed (which I manually set for testing purposes), the card is so quiet I could not hear it over my PC's system fans. The card is fairly compact, with it extending slightly over 2 PCIe slots in width, and measuring about the same width as an ATX motherboard. The build quality is good, with hard plastics being used for the fan shroud, and a very nice metal backplate. I believe, ultimately, that AMD did not make the 6600XT as a direct competitor to the 3060 Ti, but rather as a somewhat comparable part that gamers could actually buy. If you do get the chance to buy a 3060 Ti for MSRP, I would of course go for that instead of a 6600XT, but for everyone else looking for a capable 1440p card, the 6600XT Pulse is a very good choice.
