The Intel Socket 1700 was first introduced with the Intel 12th Gen processors and has been utilised since for both the 13th and 14th generations. This Land Grid Array (LGA) socket replaced the previous LGA 1200 socket. As an LGA socket, the connection pins are located within the motherboard’s socket instead of being on the CPU, itself. The processor features an equal number of contact pads, which connect with the pins when the CPU is properly seated. For these CPUs, Intel has utilised 1700 pins and pads, allowing for a more complex hybrid architecture. Intel LGA 1700 processors consist of both performance (P) and efficiency (E) cores, a combination that offers an excellent balance between performance and energy efficiency. Alongside this, the Intel LGA 1700 socket supports many of the latest computing standards. This includes both DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0, which offer increased data transfer rates for better performance across many workloads.
Land Grid Array (LGA) and Pin Grid Array (PGA) are two types of a CPU socket, used to connect your processor to your motherboard. Intel has utilised the LGA socket almost exclusively for many generations. This includes their 115X, 1200, and 1700 processors. Whereas AMD used PGA until the latest AM5 socket. The main difference between the two types of sockets is the location of the pins.
LGA sockets locate the contact pins within the actual socket on the motherboard. This helps to protect the delicate pins from damage. Plus, these sockets usually feature a covering plate that stops anything from accidentally contacting the pins before a CPU is installed. The processor has multiple pads, which connect to the pins on the motherboard. To ensure proper alignment, these sockets are usually keyed so that a CPU cannot be installed incorrectly.
PGA sockets locate the contact pins on the underside of the CPU. When inserted, the pins fit into contact holes in the motherboard socket. PGA sockets are more prone to accidental damage, as the contact pins aren’t as well protected as they are in LGA. They do, however, offer the advantage of being easier to repair if they do get damaged. A PGA CPU usually utilises a visual guide, such as a pair of matching triangles in a corner, to direct you on how to seat the processor.
