Advantages of Wi-Fi 6

Wi-Fi 6, otherwise known as 802.11ax, is the sixth generation of Wi-Fi technology. It was developed to address many of the shortcomings of previous generations that have come to light as wireless networks became more prevalent. Some of the advantages of Wi-Fi 6 are:

• Increased Data Rates Wi-Fi 6 has improved data transfer rates, with a theoretical maximum speed of up to 9.6Gbps. This is possible as Wi-Fi 6 uses innovative new techniques, such as significantly increasing the number of channels it can use and utilising high-order modulation.
• Better use of Frequencies A key feature of Wi-Fi 6 is that it features Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) technology. This divides a wireless channel into smaller subchannels. This means that multiple devices can be connected to the router along the same channel simultaneously and see no impact to their network latency.
• Multiple User Support Older routers were able to communicate with a single device at a time with Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) technology. However, Wi-Fi 6 routers utilise a more advanced form of this technology, called Multi-User, Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MU-MIMO). This allows a router to communicate with multiple devices simultaneously, significantly increasing its efficiency for a crowded network.
• Enhanced Security Wi-Fi 6 includes advances in network security, such as the use of the WPA3 security protocol. This boasts a range of improvements over WPA2, including stronger encryption algorithms, improved handshake procedures, and unique session keys.
